When I rebuilt my TR years ago I checked the rear tracking unladen and it was spot on, however after a few thousand miles it was wearing one side of the offside rear tyre. I checked again with my weight in ballast in the drivers seat and it needed one shim added or removed (cant remember now) but has been fine ever since.

I would suggest that if you are getting it checked, load it to the weight it is most usually used with, and it probably wont be far out.

It's negative camber - unlike the back of a Herald, Spitfire or GT6

For anybody still looking for more info on this subject, the following - which came up on another post - might be useful. Although it's specifically TR6, the principle and much of the info is relevant to Stags as well:

Hi guys, this is my first forum visit as logged in member.

Seeing the discussion about rear sub frames brings to mind a problem i experience.

On realeasing the clutch to pull away i hear a clunk sound from behind the offside rear end.

It can also happen when driving over a bump. the problem is not heard when there are passengers in the back.

          Could missing shims be related?

I cannot see anything that may be causing this noise.

Any suggestions are appreciated or the name of someone in Macclesfield area who may be experienced to check it out.

          regards Paul

            Hi Paul,

Welcome to the Forum which I hope you'll find friendly, helpful and, at times, amusing.

I had exactly the problem you're describing a few months ago and, although it's never possible to be sure of a dignosis without looking, I hope what I found will help you cure yours.

Firstly, I think it's extremely unlikely to be related to the shims.

What is much more likely is something to do with the front mounts of the rear subframe which, you'll be pleased to hear, is one of the easiest jobs to do on a Stag.

You'll see the mountings from the side of the car, in front of the rear wheels and underneath them is a strap that extends forwards and bolts to the rear of the rear passenger footwell area.

I'd check the tightness of all relevant bolts look forany excessve movement in the area. Most likely, your O/S mount will have failed but, don't worry, they're not terribly expensive (£20ish) and, as mentioned, they're easy to replace.

Rather than tell you how to do it - it's all in the ROM - I'll look for some links to the previous posts that helped me on exactly this subject and post them on here in a minute.

            Good luck. Cheers

            Julian

Couldn't findthe posts I was looking for about changing the mounts but, in case you haven't got a ROM, here's the relevant page (I hope the definition is ok to click and save this pic) and it really is as they say

              Cheers

                Hi Guys

This has stimulated a niggle I have had in the back of my mind for a while and thanks to you I need to get it exorcised once and for all.

I have read about shims in the past and I am positive that when I did my restoration I didn't have any shims either.

Ihave a cloudy memory of reading some time agothat the shims were fitted at the factory in order to align the rear wheels ,but only on those individual cars which needed them-I suppose to make up for individualdifferences/tolerances in engineering/production of trailing arms and/or chassis, but I'm not too sure about this or whethershims were only fitted to the mk 1's.

It would be really helpful if someone could put this to bed for me.Here's hoping...

                Hi Dave

Although I am no longer a Stag owner I have rebuilt the rear suspension on both of my Stags. one a mk1 and the other a 73 mk2 which some would call a MK1 1/2,

both of these cars had shims fitted, it is always possible that the suspension has been rebuilt before and the shims discarded, I guess the only way to find out is to get the carinto someone who doesa 4 wheel alignment

                Regards

                Mick L

Ok guys here's another one which I was going to wait and investigate once I get home again.

Took my wife out for lunch on my last day as the weather was fine. However I noticed that when I came over a bridge and took a sharp left turn ( not at speed approx 25-30mph ) the back end seemed to twitch when I straightened up the car. I thought it was just me but the wife felt it as well. It felt like the car slid back into it's correct position. Strange but unfortunately I had run out of time to investigate and was not going to post question until then. I had not noticed this before appart from occasionally cornering at speed

This sounds more like Triumph Twitch rather and anything wrong with the rear suspension.

Yeah Mike, that's the 'twitch'. I reckon it's best to learn to live with it (might give your a**e muscles some exercise :?)

It seems that people do all sorts of things to get rid of it but I had it on my first Stag and soon got used to it.

Haven't got it on my current one and you know what? ... I kinda miss it :?

                          Cheers
