Hiya Raoul, happy New Year mate !
Wire the fan to a permanent live, (battery etc) it then deals with heat sink after switch off if you've set the switch temp right. It certainly won't flatten the battery so no need for a timer, it won't run for long enough. Martin.

Happy New Year to you Martin!
Thanks for the reply, how long does your fan run after shutting the engine down? Have you any idea what temp your fan is set to cut in and out at?

      Cheers Raoul

Hiya, my fan cuts in at about 93c, so far it hasn't come on while running. With the old rad, heat sink on a hot day would switch it on and off for half an hour, now it runs for 5 mins max. Obviously you're running in more extreme conditions, but I can't see that making much difference. The ali rad sheds heat VERY fast. Run the car and make slight alterations till it's doing what you want. Difficult to give guidance from 12.000 miles away, but none of the figures are critical or cast in stone. Have a play with it. Have you still got the original fan ?
        Martin.

I have mine powered all the time, when I turn off the engine it willcome onfor a few mins then go off and come back on again about 5 mins later for a bit, the best bit is that this has cured my hot starting problems that I had on a very hot day (hot by our standards so I guess you would say just not as cold as usual!!)

Hi Tim, Good to hear from you!

Yes it is one of the options to use a direct battery feed, however I'm reluctant due to the higher ambient temps locally and heat soak, I could return to a flat battery. I suppose I could use a timing circuit to run the fan for a short time following engine shut down. Has anyone done this?

Did you have to modify your carb cold air intake duct to accept the 16 inch fan?

Any chance of a visit"Down Under" in the New Year?

              Thanks and regards,

              Raoul

I'm afraid I committed the cardinal sin of popping an edelbrock on when I did my fan :?, however, it hasn't caused me any problems.

I agree with Martin in that my fan does exactly the same, cuts in for a short time after I stop the engine. I can't give you temps as I played with the switch until I was happy that I wouldn't get a flat battery.

I was planning a visit in March, but there may be other things afoot in the New Year so I'm not sure :?. I may well plan a bit of a round trip as I have a few people to see in different parts, so if I'm your way, I'll add a couple of days on for some tinnies .

              regards

              Tim

Thanks to all for your help and advice.

I have now removed the ignition fed wire from the coil and reconnected it with a 30 amp inline fuse and thermal circuit breakerdirectly to the battery, this has stopped the relay from chattering.

I have set the adjustable thermostat to cut in when the top hose to the rad is at 95C using a temp sensor probe connected to my multimeter. I cant believe how quickly the rad sheds heat when the fan kicks in! The 1/10ths of a degree fell almost a quickly as you can count.I took the car for a run yesterday and the needlefluctuated very little. The fan only cut in after the car was idling for 3 minutes afterthe drive.

Suffice to say I'm very happy with the result and will becarrying on with the aircon mod now I know the cooling system is more than adequate.

To recap, I have an EJ Wardally rad, 16" Davies Craig fan in front of the rad, Revotec radmounted adjustable thermo fan controller, LD parts temp sender unit and a louvered bonnet.

Thanks once again and Happy New Year to all!

                All the best for 2011!

                regards,

                Raoul
