Dear european voyager, As a Stag/caravaner, can you tell me which mirrors you use when towing, do you have clip on ones?

My Stag mirrors with a spring back facility don't seem to like 'normal' clip on mirrors and tend to droop under their weight (no adverse comments please:shock

Hi Keith, I tow an Esterel folding caravan. I got a pair of mirrors that clip onto the front wheel arches from e-bay. Have you strengthened your rear suspension in any way?

I've a complete set of brand new Tex mirrors (mirrors and stalks) and the LD Part special washers still in their boxes.

With the current Mrs MartinM holding them on the doors, I can't find ANY position where I can actually see anything remotely useful behind me

          Hi Peter,

I haven't seen this type for years, are they still legal? I understand that you have to be able to adjust mirrors from the car, hence the demise of wing mounted mirrors.

I haven't strenghened my rear (suspension) as I keep the caravan nose weight down to below 75kg. That is less than Mrs. Choppermans luggage weight in the boot!

Been looking at the Tex site and found this

              Chrome Plinth Kit

For use with TEX door mirrors where the vehicle door is at a steep angle

Do you suppose that this might be the cure for door mirrors that you can't see anything in. I understand it is for door with a very steep angle and it effectively moves the base of the mirror mount through what looks like 35 to 40 degrees rotation - towards the base of the mirror mount being more horizontal.... I think this would allow the adjestment of the mirror head itself to be more useful...
what do you think... am I right?
but now the question is... is it the same length/width as the stag door mirror base plate........

I have found the answer, below is a section from the current regs.-

                e) interior mirrors shall be capable of being adjusted by the driver;

                f) each exterior mirror on the driver’s side shall be capable of being adjusted by the driver from the driving seat.

Therefore, cars towing caravans that are currently being used do
not need to have new mirrors fitted, nor do new mirrors need to be purchased. This applies to all cars used before 25 January 2010. If you have an historic vehicle pre-dating 1 June 1978, contemporary towing mirrors may be used. This situation will not change after 26 January 2010.

                So, we should be OK!

                Keith

Hi mate , Ive got original 70,s paddy hopkirk mirrors on the stag and they are quite a heavy lump so i can fit clip on mirrors onto them ,. The problem is that the clip on mirrors are plastic and the stocks for them vibrate in the wind at speed . I bought a pair of clip on mirrors off E bay Cilip on between the wing arch and inner wing and they work ok but again they are plastic and vibrate in the wind . I dont mind this as I used to drive trucks long distance over UK and europe so im used to driving with mirrors , Im going to remake the wing arch mirror stocks out of metal and this should stop it. Hope this helps.
