    185 80 14 tyre availability

There does not seem to be hardly any 185 80 14 tyres available anymore with the correct ratings,I believe they also fit Granada's,some Volvos and some P5 Rover's,is it something SOC have looked into?
I know there are alternatives but imho 185 80 14 tyres suit the stag the best.

    Thanks for that Andrew
Ive heard different opinions on the Vredstein it sells for around £100 a tyre,I had some Nankang tyres that were real good for a budget tyre but these seem unavailable now.

I got some Nangkangs through the Tyre trader place and rang them up and they got them within 2 weeks. They are brokers and search around for you, very helpful, give it a go

          Hi,
I have just ordered 4 Barum Brillantis 2 tyres 175/80/14/H at what I thought was quite a good deal. I already have 175's fitted so decided to go for the same as it is almost impossible to get 185/80/14 car tyres. http://www.tyre-shopper.co.uk/ts/search/SizeSearch.aspx

I have 175's on mine as that is the size mine left the factory with. However, when they eventually need replacing I am going to go wider. My reasoning being that if the tyre is wider, the contact patch with the road is bigger and therefore more grip under braking. Sound reasonable?

I just had a look on this site and all the tyres in that size are " R " speed rated and mostly Van tyres, be careful what you buy

Hi Mark. I've looked at the link to Camsgill, posted by Andrew, and the Hankook K715 looks perfect for our Stags. When I bought mine, the then owner recommended Hankooks, which are on the front of mine at the mine. I'm quite sure all my tyres are well over ten years old so I planning to change them and have pretty much decided to go for the K715's 185/80 R14. I'm just going to find a local garage that is prepared to fit them for me as I've found previously that not all garages will fit tyres they haven't supplied.
By the way, there is a very useful article called "Know your tyres" in the latest edition of Practical Classics (pg84) - this recommends not to drive on tyres over 10 yrs old for saftey reasons.
Let us know which ones you go for in the end Mark.
                Cheers, Ian

                  Hi Ian
Thanks for the info,I was able to get hold of a set of Michelin XAS 175 14 tyres and they got tested in Cambridge on Saturday in an emergency stop, glad I overhauled the brakes last year as well,it was close.

I bought 5 Hankooks 715s two weeks ago from Blackcircles and they fitted them a the local fitters around the corner. Only two observations so far. The diameter of the tyre must be slightly bigger than the old Michelins I had as I cannot get the inflated spare into the boot well as it is too 'big' - it catches on the fuel tank edge. I have had to partially deflate it to fit in it. Not a problem as I have an inflator to blow it up with. Second is something i haven't quite figured out yet, they seem a little more twitchy on cornering, and seem to jump occasionally. Other than that, too early to tell, but others on this Forum use them.

Hi Mark, after running the ex-factory size, I swapped for a set of Uniroyal 195-70-14s and they transformed the handling, understeer has vanished, and wear is good, the speedo has gone out by a tiny amount, but very little at 70 mph. the size is readily available and the prices are good. I stuck to the 185X80X14 for years, but the upgrade is very successful and looks right. Martin.

Very, interesting Martin especially as you say the handling has improved.
I've considered the 195 width but wasn't sure if there'd be clearance between the tyre wall and the struts - I take it you had no problems here. I wonder how many other Stags are running on 195's with no problems. I remember there was an excellently restored Stag at the Stoneleigh show in March which was on Yokohama 195/65 R15s which looked great. (See attached). I hope the owner doesn't mind me posting the picture by the way.

Sorry, I really don't like those black minilites, but the tyres look good, and no - I've had no clearance issues. Martin.
