I rebuilt my diff used a crown and pinion from a spare I bought the teeth were not in the best shape I replaced all the bearings seals etc i used viton seals even for the quill shaft I used a double lip seal for that. If you have not it might be worth your while to put in a drain plug on the bottom that way you can change you diff fluid and check if you have any metal parts going bad by looking at the oil. I made up my own spreader and some othe tools check out this http://s903.photobucket.com/albums/a...lkey2003/Stag/ it may help you. I set mines up per the book but it still whines a bit. If the quill shaft has a groove cut in it you can use a speedy sleeve to fix that or if it is not to bad use fine emery and polish it the double lip seal will help this out to because it rides on a diffenent area. Good Luck
    cheers Stuart

Thanks for the link, very handy. I have got away without a spreader so far!

One question though, I am having difficulty working out how to get the bearings on and off without damaging them. I will need to do this to allow me to adjust the shims. Any advice there would be greatly recieved at the moment!

      Cheers

Weel, I am making progress. I think I am pretty much there with the shimming now. Russ (Kryten and Alan (Stag157.7) gave my Crownwheel and Pinion the thumbs up for re-use so that has saved me a bob or two! Only bit I haven't managed on my own so far is to press in the large Pinion bearing. Russ to the Rescue on that front who knows a guy with a press. Hopefully I will have it re-assembled tomorrow.

I am finding that the Engineers Blue gets everywhere - I clearly rub my face quite a bit when I am working!!!

            YES!

Diff is rebuilt and back in the Stag.

Same Crown Wheel and Pinion, new bearings throughout and re-shimmed. It is quiet as a mouse. I am well chuffed. It is the first time I have tackled anything 'really mechanical' that included a bit of precision, dial gauges etc. The only bit I didn't manage myself was installing the outer bearing shell of the large Pinion bearing. Russ pressed that in for me.

I have been working outside in the evenings all week until after dark. Big test starts on Saturday - Kent to the Lake district, on to the Scottish Highlands, down to Devon and back to Kent over the next two weeks. Bring it on!

What a great feeling when you achieve what many tell you is impossible and should be left to the experts...Well done and three cheers for getting on with it.

Whereabouts in the Lakes are you coming to?

Congratulations to you and Russ for sorting that diff, medals are called for. Martin.

Hi stagman (Sorry, can't remember your name!)

No real plans as yet. I have an old friend who lives in Devon. Every year we get together and go walking in the Scottish Highlands and bag the odd Munro or two. He comes up to Kent, then we head North, breaking up the trip by staying in the Lakes for a day or two on the way. On the way back I drop him off in Devon which gives me a weekend to see the folks before heading back home. Accommodation is Youth Hostels and largely unplanned. Generally it works, but occasionally we get caught out and end up with some really ropey places to stay.

We once rocked up in this weird place on the Welsh coast. No life at all apart from the one Pub/Hotel. The Landlady looked amazed when we asked to stay. The only people in the whole place apart from us was the Landlady/Landlord and I think the Landlords father! In the hallway upstairs was a bucket under the central heating radiator, heater in my room was electric and only blew out cold air, the sink was coming off the wall and the bed was so saggy I was just about touching the floor. Communal bathroom was horrible. Pale blue bath, rather grubby looking, broken shower head, broken toilet seat etc. Still it gives a story to tell! I was chatting to the Breakfast Chef in the morning as we were packing up the car. Apparently, if we had turned up a day later the Army would have been in the bar and apparently are rowdy until about 3AM!

I am in Barrow which is a bit out of the real Lakes. There is a good (so I am told) motor museum in Newby Bridge if its a wet weekend would be a good place to spend some time....
Enjoy, and if you are passing let me know and I will put the kettle on! (The name is Neil <~~~~~ its at the bottom by 1973Stag RV8 etc... )

                        Well done Dave, very impressive.

Have you fitted the Hub we done as well, they will all certainly get a good testing with a run round like that.

                        Ian.

                          Hi Ian,

I intended to, my general plan is to use that one and keep the one on the car as a spare, but time got too short so for this trip the old one will have to suffice. I struggle with UJ's as I don't have a vice big enough so they can take me several days and a lot of swearing using my improvised DIY press. (Two rectangular tubes top and bottom with 8mm threaded bar between them to adjust the height). I have been working outside with a torch in the evenings for most of this week to get it done! I have fitted the big bore tail pipes I bought at the National as well and it sounds ace .

It is great when a rebuilt diff is nice and quiet, I have done 4 or 5 of them now, most have been much better, some perfect, I think the important thing is to get them sorted early before the knackered bearings throw too many metal filings between the gear teeth. I had to do my diff this spring after a trip to the Isle of Wight. It was quiet on the way down but progressively more noisy on the way back as a result of the crownwheel side bearing race developing a big hole in the outer race. Fortunately no serious damage was done and the rebuilt one can only be heard if you are listening hard for it at about 30mph

It didn't occur to me to look at your signature for your name!!!

It is looking like we will be in the Ambleside/Patterdale area so I will pass on the cuppa this time.

Bruce, I don't know if I will be able to pop in, but I will PM you now

well done Dave I think that is a real achievement with the limited facilities you have. I have got too soft with age! years ago I was happy to work in a old council lock up garage by torch light in the snow - but don't think I would(could!) do it anymore
