Can't quite remember which car I did it on , either the TR or the estate, but I had a similar clearance problem on the rear and solved it by removing the trailing arm mounting brackets, welding up the holes, then drilling new holes 1/4 inch further out to move the entire trailing arm assembly 1/4 inch inwards. This will only work if there is adequate clearance from the inner wing and shock absorber.
Another possibility is to use a hacksaw blade to prune back the lip of the arch where it is touching. Time consuming, but doesn't burn the paint off like an angle grinder.
The arch lip can also be knocked back upwards, but I would only recomend this if you are going to spray the arches as it will crack the paint, and if there is any filler in there........
