I had a new clutch master that absolutely would not bleed through. No pressure, no matter what I did. I refitted the old leaky unit and had it bled in 5 mins more for my sanity than anything else. Supplier replaced faulty master and all was fine again.

re SWMBO and dishwashering. Mine is too busy with the washing machine to have any time to spare for the dishwasher. I get the kids to load and unload it which they do under extreme protest.

Reminds me of the old joke:
Son: "Dad, why do women want to marry in white?"
Dad: "Son, all domestic appliances come in white"

Finally got rid of all the gunge and gave it a clean up tonight. It gets worse. There is extreme and deep corrosion pitting and, to cap it all, it's in the true seal operating area between the reservoir and the outlet. Any seals would be ripped to shreds in an instant.

Bloody hell Drew - surely that's not just because of 'a degradation of the fluid/grease' in a new cylinder is it ?

At least you found it before installing it

          Cheers

No, it's pure water corrosion. I guess there wasn't enough grease in it or, as it was New Old Stock, the grease had dried up and formed clumps over the years allowing moisture to do its nasty work,

            I've asked for a replacement.

It is deeply concerning to see how good you are at photographing deep, dark holes.

I do discounts on colonoscopies if you're ever in the area, and my non-intrusive method of prostate checks has recently got the thumbs up!

Suppose in this instance thumbs up is better than hands up.

Just got an eMail from Graham at Paddocks - a brand new master cylinder is on its way!

I'm very happy with the way the resolution of the problem went. First an attempt to jointly save this quite rare part with JP bits and my work. Then the immediate acknowledgement that it won't work out and the prompt reaction to put a new one in the post.

Very impressed with the instant responses from Graham at Paddocks too.

Now you have a spare on its way do you have to return the old one? It can be bored and re sleeved without the safety issues of the Brake master cylinder. It might be too expensive for a regular repair but if you have the contacts in a machine shop it might make you a good spare for later on.

My eyes are watering already. I feel I have to turn down your very kind offer of a discount.........but if I ever am in the area, I am sure we could swap stories and a beer or two!

@dasadrew - glad you had a good ending

@73stagman - are these master cylinders yet so rare as to be worth that kind of rescue operation?
