I did'nt think the internal brass cage would be so difficult to remove, mind you probably is'nt if you have the correct tools at hand.
Cheers for heads up, will wait and see if anyone else has and other ideas or practical experience removing these

    Hi Mike,
Ha ha. I did't read your previous post very well. You already mentioned the bearing puller and that you don't have one. So my post wasn't very usefull. Sorry. Hope that somebody comes up with the right idea for you (and will not mention the bearing puller again).

Well this bu**er still refuses to budge, so now soaking in penetrating oil. I have been taking it easy trying not to damage the brass cage, but have just been told that new ones are still available, is this correct???
Will persevere tomorrow, but the brass cage is winning this battle up to now, but not the war LOL

Finally managed to remove the brass cage with a set of long leg 3 pullers. What a bitch trying to remove it, god know's why, with the slide hammer it would only come up about 1.5 cm and would not budge from that position. Looks to me as if someone had used thread seal or something similar at some time in the past, and this seemed to be holding it .
Unfortunately it's now only fit for the bucket, but at least I can purchase a replacement. Personally I would not use the slide hammer again on this if I found it to be so tight, but hopefully if I ever have to do this again it, will not be as stiff to remove . Fingers crossed that this is not a regular job. At least I now know the pifalls

Julian honestly I would not post a picture of the insert on the forum as it's like a bit of shrapnel and I'm a bit embarrassed that I wrecked it, it looks so botched HA HA .
I'll send you a pic via email and you can laugh to yourself

                Hi Mike,
top of the class for effort it can't be easy all the time or else every one would be doing it, use a good O ring lube when you put it back. Of to fix my front end now, it beats going to the Thanksgiving sales over hear.

                cheers Stuart

Cheers Stuart, your probably right. What I thought would be a 5 minute job to remove brass cage turned into something of a saga for sure. Still not sure why it refused to come out for so long.
Yes your probably right about the lube, funnily enough I was thinking about putting the pump and casing back in, and bought O ring lube yesterday.
Good luck with front end, whats up with it, what you up to??
