    Camber adjustment shims

    Happy new Year all

Hope someone can shed some light on this. I was taking off the front strut the other day to fit some new Spax shocks, and when I undid the bolts to release the strut from the stub shaft assembly some shims dropped out. I had a good look around, and picked up two. They only fit on the bottom bolts, so I Looked in the parts book and concluded they are for adjusting the camber.

All well and good so far, then later I was trying to remove the old original oily innards of the strut and noticed another shim on the floor, even after I had checked all the parts for clingons and escapees!

Is there any circumstance where you would use two shims of one thickness and one of the other, or do I definitely have a missing shim somewhere??

I have two shims of 10 thou and one 4 thou at the moment.

How much difference is 4 thou going to make to the camber anyway???

    Any Ideas?

Yep, two tens and a four is quite feasible although I think all the ones I have split have had 4 shims in total.

I wouldn't have thought that a 4 thou shim is going to make a vast difference.

    Cheers

Sorry should have been more accurate, I have a total of 3 shims in all, which means one bolt had a 10 and a 4, and the other bolt just had a 10.

The shims should only be on ONE bolt. The official workshop manual states:

Hope no one buys them to use as shims, as they are the top mount bearings.

Yes! Were your shims such thick items with a bronze coating and tongue? My Stag had no shims, so I can't comment, but those on eBay don't look like they are shims with 0.004" thickness.

                Take a look at this:

As we are not at Hogwarts, putting top bearing thrust washers in a 140687 Shim Bag doesn't turn them into shims

yes your right, but one question in the picture it looks like the shims go behind the spacer but on mine the hole size meant they would only fit the bottom bolts are there different types
