I just did this job last winter and I work on the basis of not removing more than I need to
I used axel stands and jacked car right up as far as I could, see attached piccy.
Undo from the cross member the NS & OS suspension arms, dont need to remove but just lever off from the cross member!
Undo the steering rack from cross member and push towards the front of car (dont need to remove).
Undo the 8x fixing nut & bolts from cross member to chassies rail and slide off to drivers side and put to one side (unclip the brake pipe from the cross member b4 doing this).
Then removal of the sump is possible, although the rear NS sump to block nut & bolt is a basxxxd to get to
Refitting in reverse, I used the paper gasket with minimal smearing of blue sealent and have no leaks or problems at all.
Reason to do the work for me was to replace big end and main bearing shells, replace oil pump so restoring full oil pressure.
Some have dropped the whole suspension and steering rack off during this process, which allows a total refurb but I didnt.

What's that odd silver thing with a pipe coming out of ? it's not to do with the waggly stick thing in the car is it ?

      Hi Martin

Yes, I did drop the clutch slave off to one side as well to get to the oil pump out but Tim is just removing sump to replace a leaky gasket and has a stuck drain plug hence warning of sludge.
I opted to locate the bleed nipple upper most as has been well discussed to aid bleeding.
Not sure what else your reffering to?

While you have the sump removed do a quick check on the crankshaft thrust and also check the torque on your mains and rods you can also do a check on the bearings if you are going that far at least you will get a better idea how your engine status is. Better to know than not.

            cheers Stuart

Stuart - A good idea but unfortunately the sump is already back on. I did have a quick look but i have to say it was fairly brief as the engine was rebuilt 4 years ago (by Robsport) and i am getting impatient to have it running again! Its not a good excuse but its the best i can come up with I still have to refit the crossmember, steering rack etc so the job is far from over but nearly there.
