Not the drive shaft, but the stub axle can shear. Lost n/side rear wheel at 70mph several years ago. The stub had sheared clean off leaving just the brake back plate to carry the load as the car sunk to the road. The drum was still attached to the wheel, which I eventually found in the middle of a ploughed field having bounced over two hedges and through the farmer's front garden:shock::shock:.

The spit broke a shaft , stags can have the nuts over tightened on the flange on the rear drive shafts , its a fine thread and it pulls the stud out of the aluminium arm, the shaft doesnt tend to break.
