I also saw that engine. It looked brilliant at first but some incorrectly sized or fitted bolts should have forewarned that all was not right.

After simply fitting and filling with coolant, leaks were apparent in a number of places and investigations then showed the incorrect pairing of water pump impellor and cover and then a seriously damaged block in the water pump area, as well as coolant leak between the head and block, even before starting it.

It didn't help matters that the courier damaged the engine when returning it.

    Cheers

      Cheers Julian
Or maybe it did; send the courier a bill for a replacement engine?

        From the Administrators

We're keeping an eye on this thread, its a very contentious issue so please stick to what you know to be true and do not identify people publicly

It seems that this issue is causing Staginhiding some anxiety and that my comments were not taken as intended as a bit of banter and a as a joke. For that I apologise and they have been taken off.

As for the issue being discussed.....It is clear that there is one. Not all traders in my experience provide a level of service that I would expect as purchaser. I see it all the time here where I work. I have found that often it comes down to communication and that a meeting or telephone conversation is required where both parties try to work to a resolution. Staginhiding, I do have a lot sympathy and I wonder if you need to reopen talks and see if you can come to some agreement about what is to be done. I am sure that the trader will realise that perhaps it was not the best of jobs and that he needs to rectify the work.

I hope that you are able to get a satisfactory resolution and soon.

          yours apologetically.

the tim.thanks for your comments.I must point out a few facts though.I say these are facts because I have every text and e-mail from and to the chap concerned.

Firstly when I told him that there were water leaks from the head surfaces down the side of the block even without the engine having been run he suggested that the leaks were from somewhere else.
I then had a water pump leak which turned out to be a damaged block. He also had fitted a 6 vane cover on a 12 vane pump..lots of iffy threads etc..

He didnt ever offer to pay for the repairs and insisted that the engine was returned to him for his inspection.

No parts at all were missing from the engine (I have pics) and actually we needed to repair some of the poor threads in the heads..
The engine rolled in the couriers van and the cam covers, air box and pump cover were damaged.
I asked him for my money back less a reasonable amount to be deducted for the damaged items..He then told me he was going to build me another engine. In an effort to resolve the matter quickly I agreed and told him to put back the damaged parts and I would sort replacements at my cost this end.Two months later and still nothing.

I finally tried to set a final date for the engine to come back to me,allowing him another 4 weeks. He then became aggressive and suggested that I go to Scotland and pick the engine up.
I have told him that I will tackle him legally, and I will.Thats the story so far.

As I say I have every communication with him as well as the advertisement for the engine so if anyone wants to see the proof I am happy to show them..
He has treated me as if he is doing me a favour rebuilding a very poorly built engine in the first place..

            Learn your lesson folks...

That is a very strange response for someone who is saying there was nothing wrong with it. Did he actually accept it was faulty?

I would like to say a big thanks to everyone that has offered their help and support with this issue..

I had a telephone call yesterday from "the tim" who is friendly with the chap that built the engine.

He was good enough to offer to speak to the man and try to sort out the problem.

True to his word he called me back to say that his friend was going to give me my money back in a few weeks and that he was happy to act as the mediator.

Thank you for that,I guess Ive waited this long so a few more weeks wont hurt..

Will keep you all posted for hopefully a satisfactory outcome..

Its actually quite scary that the power of the forum will hopefully settle this without the need for use of the Law courts..

But again learn from my lesson and buy carefully..

He claimed to have built lots of Stag engines and looked after many Stags in the area.
The engine was offered on E-Bay as fully rebuilt with a huge spec list of replaced and renewed parts.

The sale was finalised off e-bay and payment was made seperately.
Word of warning here, never be tempted to not go through the e-bay channels as you have no come back afterwards..

Anyway long story short, the engine was poorly rebuilt and leaked water from all areas, even before it had been run.I tried to solve some of the issues but it became apparent that there were Head problems as well..

The chap said he would not do anything until he got the engine back,so it was removed and returned to him..

It is now September and he has not returned the engine or my money.
He is also now aggressive when he responds and has suggested that I travel 400 miles to Scoland to collect it as it is..

In future I will just build my own or buy from a reputable supplier..

It transpires that he does not have a bona fida business and is an individual that thinks he knows how to rebuild Stags..

Avoid this man at all costs as he is a cheat and a liar..

I cannot name him on here but if you are buying an engine from the Midlothian area PM me first..

Does anyone know this Guy as he claims to well respected in Scottish Stag circles..
Was it he who suggested doing the finalising outside of e-bay? if it was then report him, it won't get your money back but he would have been breaking the rules which they take a slightly dim view of but he'd just open up another account with another name I guess.
Always best to someone you can see doing the work
                  Mike

I,m quite new to the forum and came across this post. I live in Midlothian and sorry to hear this, I hope you got it all sorted out, I know of a person that sells stags in the area, but never met him or had any dealings with him. Most of us up here are trustworthy and would rather do you a good turn.

welcome johnw, honest people are very welcome in this club and should fit in with ease, there are always a few bad apples wherever you go but as a rule stag owners are nice people where ever and only to willing to help out . picture of your stag would be good john and you have some spectacular backdrop scenery up your way to set it off.

                        Hi John,

Welcome from me too. This thread really has been the exception to the rule as almost everything on here is positive - help, advice and general banter.

I hope you'll want to take part on the Forum, the more the merrier

                        Cheers

I've got 3 stags in the workshop just now and one coming in for an engine repair this week. NONE of this has any connection to me or my business.

Just as a final word from me on the outcome of this situation as I was the one that started it.

The person concerned refused to give me my money back, instead he sent me another engine.

I had by this time bought another engine so no longer needed his one.

I sold it straight on advertised with no guarantees as I could not offer any.

It looks like he had used another block with brand new pistons fitted etc..so I thought all would be well..

I did hear from the chap that had bought the engine that the jackshaft bolt had come off soon after start up and wedged itself under the crank pulley and halted the engine..
I did offer any technical help that I could but I havent heard back from him..recently.(which also makes me feel bad)

If anyone is buying an engine in Scotland please be aware that this chap is an individual and nothing to do with any Workshops or Garages in the area (as far as I know)
There are plenty of reputable businesses operating in the area that are not linked to him.

Although I cannot name him on here PM me for more details if you are about to buy an engine,as this chap should not be building them for re-sale..
