Boot/tonneau hinges - folks how the hell do you refit them please??!!
It is surprisingly easy to fit the torsion springs the wrong way round ! You need to check this.
Drew is right - I used a mole wrench and two pices of flat wood to make a "sandwich" round the wavy bit on the spring which allowed me to twist it with the hinge unit held in a vice. This was quite easy actually. You can then "fettle" the assembled unit back through the aperture in the boot bulkhead, although it is a very tight squeeze. I don't think you would have a hope of fitting the springs after fitting the hinges to the car.
Hi Richard, have attacked the torsion spring again today with heftier Stillsons and managed to both twist and locate them - a fresh day and a bit of perseverence was obviously needed. Have put them in a vice now to change the position of the complete hinge which will hopefully then go back thru the hole in the bulkhead, in the opposite setting there was just no way. Thanks for the advice.
Cheers Gord
Hi, i saw the clip thanks - coincidence - or does he follow the forum??!! Miraculously mine turned up today in a a box i must have checked thru half a dozen times so problem resolved.
Cheers Gord
The said hinges are now fitted folks, had a bit of a mare with the offside - a little of the body took a bit of a pasting unfortunately. Basically had to hammer the slotted locators that retain the torsion spring, back over the spring as they were fouling on the underside of the boot. Once i did that it went in ok. Still think the design leaves much to be desired tho.
TO ALL WHO OFFERED ADVICE - MANY THANKS, ALL VERY MUCH APPRECIATED COZ I GOT THERE IN THE END!! ITS A HELL OF A LEARNING CURVE THIS STAG LARK!!
