The German Owner's Manual has a pic of the Air Conditioning heater flaps and their functions. Basically the same for the non-AirCon models. The useful text (What flap is what and is controlled by what lever) is in english.

If you've got five minutes, is there any chance of you doing a rough translation of the second schematic ?

It'd be much appreciated if you could - You don't need to worry about the first couple of words after the Letters A,B & C

Here you go Julian. Don't forget the description is for air-conditioning models.

A: FRESH RECIRC (Fresh Air Circulation) - Flap is controlled by Lever A (see pic on previous page)

B: COLD/OFF/HOT - these flaps are controlled by Lever B. (see pic on previous page). Both of the flaps are then moved into position by the vacuum servo actuator. There is no intermediate position

C: SCREEN/CAR - these flaps are controlled by the Lever C (see pic on previous page)

1. Circulation air inlet
2. Fresh Air inlet
3. Air flow from the plenum via two fans on each side into the respective zone
4. heater matrix (this is the lower flat oblong in the diagram)
5. Water outlet from the plenum
6. Footwell outlet
7. Windscreen outlet
8. Water and dust outlet opening
9. Air cooler (this is the vertical dark oblong in the diagram)
10. Air grille in dashboard
11. Air vent in the middle of the dashboard

All that info is in the repair manual anyway - even in the English version on pages 82-25-00 sheets 1-4! A scanned version is available online - somewhere.

Andrew, if you need more photos than on my Photobucket link above, pm me your eMail and I have a total of about 18MB heater pics from mine and alistair's alistair260661 (Who I'm sure will not mind you having them!). I can understand your dilemma - I didn't find any of the pics in the manuals to be of much use dismantling or reassembling my heater.

It sure doesn't do any harm to have it all confirmed anyway!

I have a paper copy as well as the downloaded PDF one. The latter is useful for printing off odd pages rather than putting more oily thumbprints on the paper version!
