Seems not enough to start it from cold?

All your descriptions/symptoms point me in the same direction.

Another possibility - is it turning over quickly enough on the starter when cold?
Header tanks - you can't beat a bit of bling.

I am not convinced that there is enough volts getting to the coil to produce a good spark when cranking.

Yes the starter motor is turning it over fast enough. How can we increase choke enrichment?

The plugs do not get wet . I have used HT spark tester and this showed good spark

You are quite right about the extra fuel.
When I dismantled the chokes and checked the holes were free etc, then reassembled the chokes, removed the piston
assembly, I used a mini vac to draw fuel through the choke mechanism to ensure it was working a small amount of fuel
escaped and went into the carburettors. When we reassembled them and pulled the choke out the engine started
instantly, but then next morning back to its old self.

The only thing I can see at the moment is that there is no gasket between choke assembly and carb body. Have looked
at old parts manual which shows no such gasket, but Rimmers do a gasket set which includes one.
i would suggest that the float level is tool low for the choke pick up tubes in the float chamber to enable the chokes to work
16mm from highest part of float ( a tip is there is a joint line in the float this should be horizontal in line with the carb body)
floats in the wrong way and not upside down

Have removed piston assemblies and put a mini vac in the choke outlet hole. With the choke off, no fuel pulls through. With the
choke pulled, fuel comes through. Floats are fitted right way round, but could go higher on choke level. Will try that
                tomorrow. Thanks.

Sorry Speedy, was offline for a while, looks like Alan may be onto something. Fingers crossed.

I raised float levels up but still not starting. However they say the the darkest hour is just before dawn which is also a good time for
pondering why did it always start when I put fuel in the carb. I realised that the previous owner was elderly and unable to drive and
that the vehicle had not been driven for eighteen months. The fuel did not smell stale, but after draining and filling with fresh fuel
it could not start fast enough, hot or cold.

May I thank every one who replied with very helpful suggestions.

However we got there, you still have the right result - a running Stag.

Well done for not giving up.
