I do remember the technical articles mentioning the cardboard ends coming off (around the early 90s was it not a problem?). Brave to say I admit but maybe it was more to do with the adhesive used at the time (maybe the composition/treatment of the cardboard) etc on the cardboard rings. Surely no rings whilst being an improvement can come with other issues (I.E the risk of unfiltered oil coming through), an issue which the Classic Gold filters seem to have going by the pics:

As big a shame it is maybe the Spin On filters are the way forward on the assumption the seals in the adaptors are changed on time .

Hi Chas, zooming in on the pics, the classic gold filters do have a raised ring in the metal end caps, replicating the job that the cardboard spacers/washers do, so they should be OK to use? Tony Hart sells this classic gold filter, although he charges around twice the price of Paddocks for the same filter.

      Cheers
      Keith.

Fair point but surely metal sealing on metal surely will come with some drawbacks as opposed to rubber seals (or cardboard assuming the issue of them coming off has gone? .

The first pic was taken from the HRS eBay page .

          I think that's a fair point too

I think you are right, I have never done it because of all the horror stories about leaks but I trust Peter's judgement that his spin on conversion is good. I would prefer to buy a proper name filter than some unknown reboxed product that does not have cardboard ends.
