    Anybody repaired a compressor?

    Hi All

I'll admit this isn't Stag related but it would be if I had to do any paintwork on it. I'm actually respraying our Ford Pop from 1958 - but they don't even have a Forum.

My compressor has just packed up and I'm wondering if anyone has every repaired one - or at least help me work out if it's worth repairing.

It's a cheap one and I've had it around 5 years. Came from Makro and cost me just over £100. It's a 50l one but can't be that good quality and I can see equivalent on eBay for £104 delivered free.

It doesn't owe me anything but I'm loath to throw it away if it can be repaired at reasonable cost. However if I take it to a specialist I think they'll laugh at me and want about £100 anyway. I can see a new valve block on eBay for around £35 but I'm not sure if it'd fit. There's a leak where the air goes into the block / switch assembly and I've made it worse trying to fix it and broken a pipe.

So has anyone ever repaired one? Or should I bin it and buy another?

    Anyone's thoughts appreciated.

    Chris

Hi Chris, I think I would be worried (if I was repairing it) about the consequences of subsequent failure due to the repair. My shout would be to put out a couple of hundred £ and not have to worry too much.
Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

whats wong with it ? they are simple machines and easy to fix if they are not disposable Chinese wubbish ! the valves are a type f reed or disc affair and rarely fail unless its been made out of an old stag engine post some pics

I had a similar problem on my compressor earlier this year. I blanked off the tank where the valve was attached. The air output is now connected onto the output situated on the end of the tank. That line then feeds through an external pressure regulator. The original valve lock which was cracked now only exists as mount for the switch. It all works okay apart from the auto cut off.

One of these days I will track down a replacement valve block.

        Regards

        Bruce

Might not have a Forum, but isn't the Ford Sidevalve Club quite a thriving community? My brother has Dellows which are E93A powered and I was sure he uses the Sidevalve club for bits and bobs?

I usually look at a failure of some thing as an oppertunity to upgraided working on experience of what I had and what I didn't like about it.you could probably benefit from a larger one if you are respraying.
              cheers Steve

                Thanks guys for the thoughts.

It is one of those cheap Chinese ones so parts are difficult but I like the idea of just swapping the regulator for an inline one. At the moment it's been dumped with a repairer who's going to see if it's an easy fix. If not then it's trash and I'll follow the advice of buying a decent one and upgrading.

As for the Ford Sidevalve Owners Club (FSOC) then I've been a member for 25 years but the Pop's not really been on the road. Careers and family have all got in the way of meeting many and no forum doesn't help. However the Stag is the car I chose to own not the one that we inherited - so it's the Stag that is for pleasure. The Pop seems to be a talking point though - so many people say something like - "my dad had one", "it was my first car", "I learned to drive in one".

Pretty no, years behind its time yes, nice to drive no (awful), easy to work on yes, conversation generator yes. I'll keep the Stag though.

                  Chris.

I need to ask this question as it is bugging me! "Why is your avator photo upside down"

                  Regards

Bruce - it has been asked before so I'll perhaps start elaborating on the theme. Very strong velcro was suggested and a means to avoid an engine hoist - just lower on a strong rope. Also a means of getting out all the detritus that has built up over the years. Just shake them out.

Or perhaps it really is upside down and I took the photo on an iPhone but I'm left handed. Other programs seem to automatically put it the right way up but not the forum - I've asked technical about it and it's a glitch. The only way to fix is to edit the photo and as it has created some interest I thought I'd leave it.

                    Cheers
