O, er, thanks for that Paul, I think......... Another fine mess you got me into!! Another day in the winter diary taken up then. Think I'll opt for the easy option, tickover and kick down adjust !!

Well, sump off (again) used sealer this time, put it back on, did the bolts up opposites this time, (like on a wheel) not in the manual but what the hell, measured what was drained out at 5 litres, so filled it with 4. Manual says fill the sump with 3, so I figure to get 5 out the torque converter must be leaking back, so 4 should be enough to see if its going to leak out the gasket, and 24hs later it's still dry underneath. Next is get it off the sticks back on the wheels, start up so the pumps will fill the torque converter and see how much more to add.

Not happy bunny. Still leaking, even with sealant. Start again, another new gasket.

I can't recall that the 35 is perticually prone to leaking sump pan's are you sure it's not distorted, cracked , or coming from elswhere ?? This is the third time you have changed the gasket is it not?? Graham

It will be the third time yes. It never leaked until I topped it up for the first time. When I found it leaking from the filler/dipstick tube, I assume because of the torque converter draining back, I then started to wonder if that's what was the original leak, of course I did not think to look there the first time. Before refitting it this time, I shall hold up the sump pan to box to see if there is any obvious distortion. Just annoying that I didn't put enough sealant on this last time. Guess won't make that mistake again !!
There is a slight leak from the banjo bolt again this time so am going to replace those washers as well. I did wonder if disturbing them might cause a leak...

You shouldn't need any sealant on an auto sump gasket. Make sure you have the correct cork gasket. Any sealant getting inside the 'box can get inside the workings and block the narrow orifices.

If you must use sealant, then just a smear of Stag Wellseal will do. DO NOT use any silicone type sealant.

Dave, got the gasket from Rimmer. Short version, smeared it top and bottom with grease, just something have always done when fitting gaskets, fitted it torqued the bolts, drove home, it leaked, soaking thru the gasket and dripping off the bolts. Also dripping out of the top of the filler/dipstick tube. Took gasket off, dried it, was advised VW sump seal was THE best thing on earth, couldn't get any in the time frame I had, used silicone but only put it around the edge of the gasket ie outside the bolt holes, top and bottom, still it leaks by soaking thru, this time no pressure as have not driven it. So will try again, remembering as Graham suggested, will hold the pan upto the mount to see if there is any obvious warp-idge. I note that the BL manual copy I have says Hermatite is okay to use, so may try that. Stag well seal ? Dont think i have seen that on Rimmer ?

Rimmer's aren't the only suppliers for Stag spares you know.........

I can't understand why you are getting leaks through a new gasket in the way you describe. If the faces are clean, gasket new, and bolts tightened properly it shouldn't leak.

Search for 'Wellseal' on eBay, there is plenty on there.

                    .
Yes, quite, but there we go, only other thing I can think of is maybe Mr Haynes has the wrong torque setting. Will check my other manual.

Sun is shining sky is blue ground is dry, guess that means I'll be under the car - again! Hopefully the last time with this bloody leak. Does anyone have a BW manual that shows the torque setting for the sump bolts ? 'Cos that's about all I can think of now, that the one in the Haynes manual is wrong, (15 ft lb) which is why it's leaking.......

                        Here you go 9-12lbs/ft:

Well seems to be sorted. Had already decided that I would take the torque setting for the bolts up a bit before Dave kindly gave me the BW info, of 9-12ft lbs. all done up and double checked at 17ft lbs. Next day there was signs of leakage from be corner, so gave the three bolts on the corner an extra quarter turn on the ratchet, been dry now for three days... finally.
