I have a 2000 XJ8 with 167,000 miles on the original engine - same as the XK8. If I remember rightly, the V8 engine had Nikasil liners until early 2000 after which it went over to steel liners. The Nikasil liners, which actually have superior wear resistance to steel ones (with the correct fuel) had problems with high sulphur content petrol supplied in the UK - this isn't an issue now though since the Sulphur content was reduced around 2000 - can't remember the exact date.
I've found the 4.0 V8 to be a good power unit and have ordered a sequential lpg kit which I'll be fitting over the next few weeks. This kit would also fit the XK8 and has a decent range with a 102 litre spare wheel tank.
