I, at several stages in my motoring life, looked seriously at buying a Beemer, the last urge was a 125i coupe, a compact with a bit of go and not too over priced, however...I have NEVER been able to find a Beemer salesman I that would talk sense...ie, we don't give discounts Sir, are you thinking of moving up to a BMW Sir,we might tax it and fill it with petrol but no further concessions Sir and all of them spoke to me as if I had never driven a vehicle and then there is pretentious nonsense about "this is our sports hatch(estate), sports coupe(saloon, it had 2 doors and a boot) and so it goes on...I know they have to sell cars, but must they talk so much Bo****ks? They spoil any chance of selling a car to me at every opertunity! So the Rangy, Jag and Stag are safe from being sold on...

i hate car sales people (PC) but I trust I have learned to look past and thru the hype to see the metal and plastic arrangement they want money from me for.
I have stood up from the sales guy's desk and walked out without a word..... got me two grand more for my trade in and a nice lady sales person instead.....

I've got someone working on that for me. It will be electro-mechanical apparently. Speed pickup from a segmented wheel to a small box fixed to the back of the original speedo, converting the pulses into a rotary movement. Yeah, baffles me too, but I am assured it will work . Same magic box will work the inhibit and reverse lights. Should be tested and ready in a week or so, and with the BMW tailshaft extension I ought to be ready to go.....................

Dave, after all this banter I risk a another serious question:
I have this BMW rear cover ( part no. 1043 425 041) on the shelf and would like to use it for my ZF. Did you ever think about a pure mechanical solution for the speedo drive using the present speedo cable? I mean a little gearbox driven from the propshaft?

Hi Klaus,
Although quite proficient with spanners and hammers, I haven't much of a clue when it comes to this type of electro-mechanical technology. Which is why I jumped at the offer of the magic box mentioned above. When it is complete it will probably be available commercially from an already respected supplier of Stag modifications.

I've now got the BMW cover and it fits perfectly. I have to remake the crossmember adaptor I had prepared as it doesn't fit, but that is only a question of cutting and bending some steel.
