It must be possible to fit this ZF box on the end of a RV8 as well...... another project???

It is, and somewhat easier too as ZFs were used in Range Rovers.

Nearer to £3k now. The kit is available from Monarch Stags for £2600 http://www.monarch-stags.co.uk/transmission then there is fitting on top. The kit is, however, a very well engineered item. You get a reconditioned 'box, bespoke bellhousing, modified output casing with speedo drive to connect to your existing speedo, crossmember, etc. etc.

Yes, I'd noticed that, a minimum of £2950 fitted and could be more if VAT applies to the fitting charge. I'm not saying for one minute that it isn't good value but the more expensive it becomes, the more tempting it is to DIY.

Not only will it cut fuel consumption, it will help to stem another Stag drawback. Less fuel burned in a higher gear (with lower RPM) means less heat to get rid of as well.

Getting a ZF is not as simple as it once was....I do a lot with used Jaguars and at once time I fought off hundreds of 'offers' of old XJ40's in PX for a later model, mainly because the owners knew they were worth a couple of hundred tops with some rot and no MOT. Nowadays they are much more thin on the ground with the best of the survivors marked up at £1000 plus - not good when you only want the 'box.

I can't help thinking I should research on the later ZF 4 spd as fitted to the X300, hundreds of those around now but they are run by an ECU, not a kickdown cable, and they have 'sport' mode to complcate matters. One day...

At least today I ticked off one 'round tuit', having successfully converted our ride on mower to run on LPG. A record for one of my own 'must do' list items, I bought it 4.5 years ago and could have saved enough to buy the mower by now!

£15 a week at this time of year in mower petrol doesn't fill me with joy, especially having to drive into town to get it if I run short on the only day it isn't raining.

4000 litres of LPG on site and more problems with the mower carb. which I can't face again, it's like working on a sewing machine and on a Sunday I've had enough of fixing stuff all week.

Convert the thing, fill it up virtually for free anytime, forget the £140 for yet another carb - No contest

Thanks, I might have to go that route.

It would be nice to be able to road test the 'box and have confidence in it before taking the plunge, then pick all the related bits off the donor car too, but I know you got lucky with a used 'box. Maybe I will too?
