Inside that cavity is gauze and it rusts or even breaks down. Or, it can become blocked or worst still, if teh cam covers have been shot blasted, the shot can get inside and then into the engine

As Andrew says. Whatever method is used to remove old paint, you dont want to get anything like grit or chemicals trapped in the gauze, to later escape and ruin the engine. So we remove the gauze, then replace later after cleaning and painting.

The gauze acts as a flame and oil vapour trap. The gauze often becomes contaminated with old carbonised oil, and its effectiveness degrades, and can allow a lot of oil vapour to escape the cam cover. The end result is that the oil gets sucked back into the engine, via the Strombergs, and burnt, resulting in high oil consumption.

          Hi Gents,

What do you replace the gauze with ? as I assume it will be badly contaminated after many years of use

I copied vmad's idea and used a stainless brillow pad. It's made of tiny tapes of stainless rather than wire . holds together nicely . got it from good ole Aldi
