    Julian,

It looks great. I'd been thinking along the same lines, a Google search brings up the same unit with all manner of badges , logos and wildly varying prices. Don has made an extremely valid point about the manual chain type too. So it's off to Lidl I go...and if I luck out then I know some Chickens who would love it

A word of caution though - the way these things are rated varies too, and I would not trust it to lift an engine with gearbox or not. The last time I read the spec. sheet I think it referred to 'Max. pull' and not a straight lift. Much better to stick to a dedicated engine crane IMHO, and remember that any hoist is only as good as it's fixing to the roof!

In any event, if anyone wants to lift an engine with one of these hoists, please check all the spec. sheets first as the rules can be bent by clever wording, and if I'm wrong about it then fine, but at least you'll have checked first. The first use is a one-shot deal.

    Regards

    Steve

Regs state the SWL should clearly be on the equipment label, so thats easy to check.

If my garage roof is strong enough (I think it is), this would be brilliant, particularly if I could rig up a beam for it to run on.
        Hi David,

According to this website the Stag engine weighs 446 lbs, I assume that is the engine only without carbs and all that lark (and without the gearbox and OD attached of course!). So theoretically at least the engine crane should be strong enough, although personally I'd make sure to stand well aside when it's being lifted out...

        Cheers,
        Joakim

          Just as an aside, and to show what can be gotten away with in design;

I once lifted a Rover V8 lump with just 2 ordinary cable ties (not the beefy ones) just to see if it could be done. Doesn't mean I'd stand under it though.

I do a lot with pressure vessels too, Steam Boilers and LPG tanks.

A normal, everyday Aluminium drinks can will easily cope with 100 psi, but that doesn't mean I'd be happy to use it to replace either of the above.

I'm just saying please check first, boring I know, but....

          Regards

Many years ago, I rebuilt a RV8 engine on a trestle table. I had the engine fully rebuilt and dressed, and whilst the family where eating their Christmas dinner, there was a bang from the garage....! I'm now rebuilding the Stag engine on a engine stand!
However the MGB shell I rebuilt on cardboard boxes covered in plywood, stood up fine, luckily the garage wasn't damp.

I guess its Ok until that moment when the overdrive filter housing catches on the front cross-member, and you wonder why the body is no longer resting on the axle-stands !!
