A long way back, my Father's 1800 Land Crab Automatic refused to fire up one cold and frosty. We tried to push the car out of the way but it refused to come out of park just to make our day.
After much ado, it was found that the Park Cable was the only thing earthing the Engine, including all the bits above. The intense heat had caused it to weld up to the outer cable solidly and some lengthy cranking put it over the edge. It had to be replaced later on. The original braided earth strap had worked its way of of its 'P' clip terminal collar, and that led us back to the engine mounts which were a year or three past their first flush of youth, and well beyond.
So that's why the exhaust manifold joint kept leaking......

Hi thanks for all the comments / hints
just checked my multi meter on my modern car
BATTERY: 12.45 VOLTS engine off
CHARGING @ 14.35 VOLTS engine on tick-over
CHARGING LIGHTS ON 14.22 VOLTS at 2500 rpm.
So multi meter seems to be very accurate ? off to the factors Monday morning ,think I'll take the stag.
They are saying I have a wiring problem ,I've checked all connections e.g. positive and negative terminals plus earth to body and engine.Last edited by LAMBRETTLAD; 10 January 2015, 20:39.

Correct
it was the regulator ,but it wasn't faulty ,it was set at too higher rate for a stag ,for a more modern car with smart charging ,i.e. some moderns charge at 15 to 18 volts !, so the whole alternator was changed ,because of the wrong regulator ,
why does always happen,If i fell in to a tub of dolly patrons I'd come out sucking my thumb
sorry mr mod
