    Scissor lifts

Hi, does anyone have any experience of scissor jacks. The type that go under the car and have rubber pads that run along the sills . When lifted they give a height of about 550cm level. They can be locked in that position. You can also tilt the lift at either the front or back which gives you what looks like good access . These are priced at around £350 plus delivery. They have a 1500kg lifting capacity. You can buy ones that are hydraulic but you can't tilt them and they cost £900 plus. They seem better than ramps and axle stands . Thinking of getting some , what do you think? Also for what it's worth I think we should keep the magazine , I would miss it .

      Hi Michael,

I'm only on my tablet at the moment so can't post any pictures but, as Dave has said, I've got one from CJ Autos and think it's brilliant.

It doesn't look like you're that far from me so you're welcome to come and look at it - maybe in action - if you like.

If you do go for one, PM me as there are a few tips I'll give you.

      Cheers

      Julian

That looks very good Glenn thanks for the link
I am have been looking at various lifts but the problem I have is most of the won't easily go under the TVR much like that vette in their video 😄🇬🇧 I can't even get a trolley jack under her and have to either use planks of wood or a small sizzle jack to get a small amount of lift. I then use my CJ auto Ramps which have the lift function but I have to get the car in the air to even put them under!
i was most recently looking at a set of ramps not dissimilar to the ones dealers use to display cars, some of the better ones have a crossbar which can be used to raise the axles with a hydraulic jack. I'll find the link and post it later.
This looks neat too unlike some of the bulky ones I have looked at. I suppose the only downside is the height isn't that great and I bet the shipping will cost a packet not forgetting any tax etc. if they are prepared to deliver over here? I didn't check that in a quick look at the site.
          thanks again
          cheers glyn

Lots of variable scissor lifts on the market and usage may well decide you upon what you would like to buy.

If you have a modern garage with adequate room and head height you could buy a full size Hydraulic scissor which will allow you to walk under it whilst working.

If you have a more typical garage with restricted head height or width you may decide a scissor with restricted lift ( 1 metre) gives ample undercar access for sitting and working especially when mounted flush into the floor.

Then you have the much smaller "tilting table" scissors which offer the capability of being mobile and able to be slid under the Stag and afterwards lifted and stored elsewhere, it's lift is much more restricted being about a couple of feet but it has the advantage of being tiltable which allows access to one end at a time with a small increase in the available height underneath.

Whichever system you choose it's important to consider where on the car you will be lifting it's weight on, many owners may decide that given the age of the cars they would prefer not to use any method of lifting upon the sills which may cause damage. Also it concentrates the mind when laying under a car and you realise that the violence and shaking you are putting into it (sometimes necessary, or if large amounts of torque are being applied) may dislodge or move the car if not supported safely.

This is my choice, a hydraulic scissor lift with 1 metre restricted lift which works nicely in my standard width restricted height garage. There are a number on the market (at least 3 different models) which like mine have double fulcrum individual ramps which lift absolutely vertical with a sliding foot encompassed within its floor pad, and separate hydraulic rams under each ramp which offer unrestricted access down the car. The model I chose was a Strongman Clifton which I bought from e bay and is a used "snatch back" from a hire firm. It's condition is excellent and I estimate it had only had some small usage before I bought it. It cost under £800 and I slotted it into the floor to make it flush and prevent me tripping on it (again !). The new cost is around £2200 and there is another model from Automotech 7530 which is very similar and costs about £1650 both costs inc of VAT.

I lift the Stag with rubber blocks on the rear subframe support bolts at the rear and I have a removeable steel crossmember support I lay across the ramps with rubber blocks on and lift the car on it's central subframe anywhere it best suits it.

              P1010191.jpg

Some different scissor models have a travelling beam which rolls across the garage floor (need to think will it chew up any floor covering) and it's single hydraulic ram and supporting steelwork is centrally mounted which restricts the access down the centre of the car. Both Strongman and Automotech also offer models like these as an alternative to their models itemised above, they are cheaper, somewhere around the £1100 area.

So there are many alternatives, review the market and decide which scissor suits your pocket, garage layout and safety requirements best.

Yep your right lots out there . I bought a similar lift for my lawn tractor it lifts it sideways and gives very good access and is very sturdy . The scissor jack I am looking at is the lift and tilt a very similar lift to the one for my tractor . They are around £350 delivered from Germany. Ones from England are £340 plus £50 delivery. I could not warrant the cost of £1100 pounds for a hydraulic one . You do get a surprising amount of access with this type of lift . All wheels off when locked at level either 2 wheels when tilted forward or backwards and locked . Might well get in touch Julian thanks for the offer. Michael.

I have one of these on my wish list, it doesn't have a bar across the mid section, which should allow an easier exhaust removal.eBay item number:

Yeah...but do you see what I mean about them having a lot of junk in the middle between the ramps, makes it difficult to work around.

                              I have the Automotech 7630.
Had it for a few years and used it under a Spitfire and then the Stag.
For me the pointers was the width of the lift and where it lifts the vehicle i.e. not on sills.
Not had any problems with it and easy to move.

I talked to Automotech before ordering and they helped.
