I think he's trying to say, rather than just try to restart it. he's trying to feel if it's tightened up. could be wrong

Yes correct, just feels a bit brutal jumping straight back on the ignition key!

Exhausts checked, no problems, all in tact.

What ever it is if far too aggressive for it to be fuel system etc, the seizing effect is at least as good as the brakes under full braking.

Yesterday I got a colortune and a couple of cylinders were a little lean, confirmed by pale coloured spark plugs (maybe a cause of excess heat?)

Rectified that, put a load of upper cylinder lubrication in the fuel tank, and went for a drive. the car ran fine, brought it home, set the engine to about 1750rpm and had it running at that in the shed for around 1 hour, then proceeded to go on a 50 mile drive with no problems. I just took it dead steady.

Ive been on to my engine shop man and told him the symptoms and he reckons piston problem. He reckons to run it in very steady for a long time and see how it goes.

Thanks for all the responses on this, err, minor issue,
      James

A good point have come across that problem on newer cars with sealed gas caps, in fact have seen a collapsed tank, but my Stag has a venting cap, so if stock cap has been replaced make sure it's of the venting type.
