I see 2 of the Stag photos are Herald's. Would like to try one first to see now effective it is, as there is a lot of wind force on the screen. I have a Rimmers clone of the Bosscreen which does not strap to the top of T bar like the Bosscreen. It needs straps or it bangs against the T bar at speed.

No, you don't need the horizontal part - I sometimes drive mine with the roller blind unopened, and it doesn't seem to make much difference to the noise or buffeting.
However, I think it looks very odd like that and you certainly wouldn't want to sit in the back with the screen in front of you - you'd look a bit like criminal in the back of a police van
Also, the horizontal part stops any light items in the rear getting blown about or completely out of the car.
