    Surely the action of moving the gear-lever out of 3 or 4 would release the solenoid and the OD wouldn't be engaged? Unless, like Julian, you were extremely unlucky and the solenoid had stuck.

      On a similar note, I've been a passenger in a 3 series BMW (the early type one) and mate who was driving shoved it in to park accidentally, there was a lot of noise followed by the car skidding to a halt

      Amazingly it survived the abuse

        again on a similar note,i tried bump starting a stag ( my brothers ) in reverse, the result pulled the selector rods out of alinement,had trouble getting it in any gear then,he was not best pleased ended up having to go in to hart racing for repair

          Personally, I'd be a bit careful of this. 'J' types particularly do sometimes seem to take a little while to switch back to direct drive, especially when cold. Only a second or so, but it might be enough time....
