Cola contains phosphoric acid which is also an ingredient in many cure-rust preparations, ie the ones that turn rust black as iron (III) phosphate.
Personally I always stick to tonic water.

Coca Cola is a great cleaner too - WC's, glass, chrome etc
But like any mild acid, care needs to be taken as it can etch if left too long
Vinegar used to be the farmers trick to free up siezed bolts
