When I've rebuilt my differential and refitted the hardtop, I'll get to installing the temperature sender in the proper place. Then I'll contribute to this fascinating thread.

Temperatures on engine surface

Just fitted the sender to the surface of a spigot on the inlet manifold, covered with a piece of rubber and secured with a hose clip. Much better. It now reads a steady 70 deg whilst running, and rises to around 75 when stopped. So I think the rubber helps to keep the sender insulated from drafts. Now I can set my alarm temperature to about 85C, and that should catch any overheat situation should it ever arise.
