At that point you simply bought what in your opinion was the best replacement as the original was knackered and beyond help! The point I was trying to make is that there seems to me to be a lot of people posting on here and elsewhere about replacing bits if they have a problem with the car - i.e. car won't start easily - will then spend money on a new starter when that is not the cause of the poor starting. Another recent example was the debate over carbs - they have poor running, starting etc. Get their strommies refurbed and still have the same problems, then replace with an alternative Holley/Weber or what ever and then have yet more problems (oil leaks etc.), as was identified often (not always) the problem was that the engine itself was worn - poor compression, burning oil etc. If that problem was sorted the original refurbed Strommies would have been fine and no need for a new starter. Same with, dare I mention it, H.T., they will not cure a basic cooling system fault, leaks, HGF, blocked rad etc., but they can give you a margin of "safety" and peace of mind. But what I said still holds true - "if everything is working properly" there is no need to replace it with an uprated/redesigned/modified whatever. If you want to do it for peace of mind or because you like the look of it or you just like playing then great, but don't do it to cover up a basic problem elsewhere.

Agreed that's probably why I personally replaced every nut and bolt.

I have posted this before and Russ agreed with me, It's not a good idea to use cold start sprays as they it can lead to exploding air boxes or even, and I have seen it, bent Con Rods. Just some friendly advice but it's your car if you want to use it

I bought a machine that was addicted to that stuff. When I took it in bits every top compression ring was snapped, one of which into 3 pieces and the small fragment of ring was trying to escape the ring groove

No wonder it was gutless. It didn't use any oil and ran like a swiss watch though (once you managed to get it started!).

I replaced the starter motor on my GT6 for one of these. I was immediately disappointed by the sound it made.... tinny and feeble... despite the higher torque. It lost the low down grunt.

Thanks to all for the usual great advise, may leave the Wynns option for now but most certainly going to invest in beer!!!

Mind made up, going to go with the original replacement to overcome the dreaded click, have tried the usual check of all connections,

All thanks once again, invaluable info

                  Cheers

                    Hi Mal,

You can just replace/refurb the solenoid. I would also check the ignition switch is not dropping too many volts due to high resistance contacts. If it is it won't be long before the problem reappears. If there is not enough "power" reaching the solenoid it doesn't close with a smart thump which causes arcing and eventual pitting of the copper (as shown in useful recent post on the subject by Graham (staggard) http://socforum.com/forum/showthread...light=staggard ) which gets you back to square one. As I said in an earlier post it's no just good curing the symptoms, you need to check on the true source of the problem.

Sorry honestly no offence but I actually laughed when I read this. I must not be as big a petrol head as I thought.

"It's a starter " Again each to their own.
