Rob, your right but that was not the battery I originally saw. All the dimensions on this page, as quoted, are fine.
You know, when I posted this thread I didn't realise the fun I would have!! It's already worth the membership and I've got months left yet.

We're going away (sadly, not in the Stag) for a few days but if this thread is still going when I get back then I'll go and measure the battery. The tray and all that area is completely standard on my car.

      Cheers

As Jeff says, "they walk amongst us". Such fun!

What advice, if any, can you offer regarding its replacement. Not something I've ever had to do.

So, I took out the battery and charged it on the bench just to see how bad it was, in the mean time having ordered a new one.

The old one is now, on the bench, holding a charge of around 10.7v. So it seems to me that I may have leak but where do you start looking?

              10.7 volts = a flat battery Brian

                  Well I'll be ---------.

So, when does a 12v battery become flat?

Basically, at any voltage below 11.5 - 12.0V really. Remember that on charge (in the car) the terminal voltage will be around 14.0 - 14.5V. Even on a bench lower current charger, it should be 13.8V ish.

A good battery, just off charge should be nearer 13V that 10.7V! That sounds like one cell has died = whole battery!

                    Cheers,
                    Mike.

As Mike says, a good cell = 2.1 - 2.2 volts times that by six

10.7 volts means a dead cell. Which as has already been said, means a dead battery!

LOL, I realised as I hit "post" that it was effectively a duplicate. Oh well.

                              Actually, it's the Leicester Mercury.

Listen chaps, duplicates or not, thanks for your help. It saved me a lot of hassle.

As the others has said Dead cell in battery..
Depending on how old the battery is and if it's been sitting for a long time, it may have sediment built up in the bottom of a cell.
Sediment build up can short between plates.
Calcium built on plates will cause problems too, but will need to be pulsed to break up....

I have rinsed out a battery before, ie battery upside down, hose inside to get the crap out, Shake the S*** out of it, re-rinse etc, then refill with new battery acid.

This has recovered a battery, but doesn't always work.
Been less successful trying to pulse the battery....

                                Allan

PS use old cloths when working with battery acid....
As any acid splashed on them, will cause holes when your clothes are next washed.
