When I stow the hood away, I always tried to unzip the window first, then leave it hanging down behind the rear seat, then when erecting the hood first attach the two front pins and before letting the rear all the way down TRY and zip the window up, usually with no success. Here in Canada the summer weather is mostly top down weather, so was not as big an issue, but this past early summer we went to a Toronto Triumph Car Show and it peed down with rain, so armed with safety pins and duct tape secured the rear window in place for the 180 mile drive.
Upon our return I ordered a Jeep Wrangler zip, comes 106 inches in length but had it custom cut to 86/89 inches [no notes with me here] dropped the Stag off for 3 days and they removed the top, undid all the rear stitching, removed the old zip and fitted the new one in its place. Both ends of the old Aldridge zipper did NOT have ends fitted to hold both sides together, they were just sewed across sandwiched between the two layers of top.Now with the new Jeep Zipper both ends are sewn in securely plus each end now has a clip that both sides clip into, just like a NORMAL zipper on a coat or tent.
Can be opened either from inside or out, useful if you have a rear wind screen, or can be opened from the right side or left side of the car, the new zipper did not require any modifications to be done to the top at all.
$25.00 US is equal to about 15.00Pds, now would purchasers of new tops object to a price increase of say 20-25 Pds knowing that it will last a truly life time??At British Car Day here in Toronto every September with some 1400 Brit cars on the field, as it was 45 years of the Stag model we were front and centre in the show. Ironically the Stag parked next to mine, had just had his hood refitted, why you may ask, well his Aldridge zipper had parted, so as he was flying over to Scotland he first removed his top and dropped it off at Aldridges in Brownhills, where it was "fixed" by them. He then paid to have the top refitted when back in the US and compared the end result with my fix and when he saw the difference between the two he was not a happy camper.
The old British Naval expression comes to mind 'do not spoil the ship for just a happeth of tar' and it is certainly applicable to the Aldridge zipper that they continue to use on the STAG, our tops fit differently, there is much more tension due to the glue and screw method of installation.
My Aldridge seats, front and rear covers fit 100%,as do all my new carpets, so again this is not a rant about Aldridge, the only issue I and many others I have discovered, is with the zipper used which they Aldridge DO NOT make but use.The zipper comes in a large roll and they just cut off the 86/89 inches and sew it in place. I know this as I have visited their place in Brownhills and was impressed with their work on all their products including their top BUT not their zipper used.
