Have a look at the spindle seals and the seals on the temperature compensators. If they are at all hard, crumbly or missing, it's a good clue as to the general condition. If you find anything amiss, then you need to rebuild the carburetters.

I would certainly fit new rubber diaphragms as well after 10 years, as they are bound to be perished. Strombergs are reliable things, and when cleaned and properly set up, should give years of service..

'ang on minute, Ian; I'm 61 years old - and I'm still working.... , and reliable... , sort of... , a bit... .
Well, OK, maybe not quite what I once was but.... , I don't think I'd improve much from a full service - not any more... .
And you think you're confused.

However, I reckon they (Stromberg's) would benefit from a bit of tlc, Apples.

So you found something amiss! The 'O' ring on the needle adjuster has perished, so you can be sure all the other rubbers are similarly useless.

Buy a rebuild kit. Go on, you know you want to.

yes the car is very original, all mk1 bits, but not for long its got alloys and will have the cill covers and pin stripes once finished

Carburetter rebuilds are quite easy, much more so than alternators or front outriggers.

Buy the more comprehensive kit from Burlens - it has everything you need and there are lots of instructional pages on the web......

And I was amazed at how much better the engine runs afterwards.
