Is it possible to fit a clutch plate the wrong way round??

    Hello!
    Unfortunately the answer is "yes."

I had a noise come from the gearbox when letting up the clutch whilst the car was at rest. However, once the car was moving, the gearbox was silent.

The garage that installed it obviously had problems as they had extended the clutch slave push rod to get enough "release bearing travel."

To ensure they had got the bearing in the right place, they had drilled an inspection hole in the bell housing of the gearbox and later covered it with a metal plate and four screws.

    I took some pictures to show what I found;

    1. Clutch slave push rod and inspection plate.
    2. Clutch in place behind spring plate showing "flywheel side" written on flywheel.
    3. Worn down spring retainers on clutch friction plate.
    4. Close up of wear.
    5. Crankshaft flywheel bolts with the corners knocked off where the spring retainers have hit them.

If you see these tell tale signs - you know what's happened.

    Regards,
    Richard

Sorry to hear of your issues. When I remove a clutch the first thing I do is look for a "FLYWHEEL SIDE" marking, and if I cant find one write it on in pen. Quite how it has been put together without a thought I'm not sure

Not surprising they had to extend the pushrod - they have fitted the slave cylinder the wrong side of the engine backplate.

The garage that installed it = a bit polite under the circumstances me thinks!

and this is work you paid for or a previous owner?

regardless of stag or not we are talking pretty bloody basic spannering.

I did notice when doing Paul Goldstars Clutch with him that the new plate wasnt marked. but the old one was so it was a simple case of matching it up. But had we not had that reference point luxury then the tiniest bit of brain usage would have worked it out.

OMG! Sort of reminded me why I learnt to do my own car repairs.

On picture 2 you can clearly see the engraving "FLYWHEEL SIDE"

I hope so. The good thing is that the poor repairs are basic and can be found easily enough. As for the wiring, well I think we've all experienced trouble with the interior lights at sometime.

For anybody who is still experiencing trouble with interior lights, you may want to take a look at my 'Interior lights - an explanation' in the technical section.

                          Cheers
