SO what did you you do with your Stag today?

    got home from work at about 1 o'clock this afternoon and had a few hours fettling before it got dark
    Stags been running like a sack of 5h1te for a while
    so I removed the tops off the Stromberg's to check the diaphragms, they where in good condition
    I cleaned the piston up with some WD40 because it was covered in dashpot oil
    put it all back together
    and it now runs beautifully
    still needs to be tuned properly though

      Drove the Stag to a local English run Garage nearby to have my Alloys refurbished and new tyres fitted. When the car was up on the ramp noticed a water leak I wasn't aware of, so they will attend to that as well.

      Noticed a number of old cars in the garage besides newer ones, including an old Golf MK1 (I think it was) convertible with lowered suspension and I suspect tweaked engine for sale at just under €6,500, and an old Merc "S" type coupe that I was told was quite rare. There was also a red XJS MK1 coupe in there that had been stripped and was being rebuilt.

      An Engish guy then came over (who works there and could well be the owner), asking about the Stag, saying he was a Classic Car enthusiast himself and had several (including the aforementioned Merc), including in one corner of the Garage a Mk1 Escort 1600E that he is re-building, and will probably be worth a lot of money when finished (I thought the Escort version was a 1300E and only the Cortina had the 1600E engine, but I wasn't going to argue with the man looking after my Stag).

          Slightly worrying that I learned to drive in a brand new Mk1 Escort 1300E. Having a tacho made pulling away so much easier...

          But today, I washed the Stag in the winter sun. It does get grubby quickly driving this time of year, better than leaving it in the garage though.

            Just had a phone call from the Garage who have my Stag saying it is the Radiator itself that is leaking.
            Seems a day for leaks as the next door Apartment to us (which we own and rent out), has also just developed a water leak from it appears the pipes somewhere in the ceiling, so now got a plumber looking at that as well.

              Finished fitting the new rad, repositioned alternator and top hose mounted fan switch.
              Only to find the s##g w###er ally tank that shall not be mentioned wants to foul on either the alternator pully or if raised to clear will form a nice speed bump in the bonnet if closed onto it.
              Any takers for a nice ally tank?
              Will have to do a breakers run tomorrow to find a plastic one.

                mine fitted by adding two little brackets off the top of the strut housing ,and my alternator is also moved t the top ,I also used a shorter belt to move the alternator away from the wing ,hope this helps

                  Hi Phil,
                  I often wondered about that SW tank and how it would fit with the HRS type bracket - is this what you have or the Wards one?
                  ive got the Wards one, no header tank but it makes the alternator sit much closer to the head plus, if you’ve got a bigger alternator (as I have) it doesn’t vibrate like the HRS one did.

                    Have Tony's bracket and a 126 series alternator so will have play in the morning and see what I can invent or butcher to get round it....may even cut n shut the bracket.

                      Problem sorted
                      Have welded a lug on the centre mount of the bracket, this has allowed me to lower the alternator by about 3 inches, along with a shorter belt (AVX10 1050) all now fits with no clearance problems.
                      Now the list continues.

                            Put the hard top back on. Sadly. And horrors, there are gaps between the doors and the rubber on the hard top. Hoping this will settle down and the gaps reduce so the car is at least watertight.
                            Now need to wash the car, and polish it and lightly oil the chrome for the winter.

                              WD40 works well on the chrome...collects the dirt but is easily washed off and re applied.

                                Used it to go into town to meet SWMBO for lunch, then a blast around the local area, took him home for a good wash. Now it’s in the garage in his pyjamas!
