Just had a lot of bits done at Robsport they fitted a new bottle top with a new washer pump and on the invoice it shows they fitted a non return valve so perhaps thats the problem

Well sometimes you miss the obvious. Last night I had another look and filled the bottle to the top, put the pump back on and guess what? Yes it worked. I had previously only filled the bottle about two thirds so assume that the pump just needed more water to prime itself. Anyway thanks everyone for your thoughts and input.

No, the problem appeared to be that when the bottle was not full the pump would not prime but filling the bottle meant that the pump had less head of air to over come and thus primed.
