Just ran the car up the little side road and back a couple of times. Temp. gauge seems to like a bit of fresh air coming through the radiator so that might point me in the direction of an electric fan.

Temperatures are basically between 71°C and 82°C with the exception of the LH Transfer Housing which is 88°C and, of course, where my overtemperature warning switch is fitted.

Hottest points are the transfer housings at 82°C and 88°C
    Top Hose around 71°C
    Hose to heater around 74°C
Return from heater (set to blow hot air) around 66°C
A couple of other bits around the radiator 74°C

It's quite a hot day here at 24°C in the shade, and the car is in the sun.

    How does all that sound?

    Cheers

    Drew

Sounds OK to me, Drew. If anything a bit on the cool side, but think you may need to go for a run.

I've not done any idling obs, but when running and driving enthusiastically, using the capiliary temp gauge I see typical temperatures 88 - 93C (not calibrated the temp gauge but occassional checking with the IR confim this reading). No VC fan, but an EHP 14" Kenlowe (sensor in the top hose) switching on ~93C, off @ ~88C (as observed from the temp gauge). On long decents, temp goes down to ~83C. On switch off, temp rises to 100+C, though usually do a cooling down idling for 3 - 4 min, which reduces the max heat-soak temp to ~98C. With normal electric temp gauge, this heat-soak effect isn't normally seen as the gauge is off with ignition. Sensor is in the usual location in the LHS transfer housing.

Go on - give it a drive - you know you want to

Yep, aching for it now. A bit complex though. To register the car you need a new MoT, to drive to the MoT, you need a registration, to get a registration, you need insurance ..... Germans, huh?!

The solution is a 5 day short-term registration which allows you just to drive to the MoT station and back again. As I don't know what they might find which I'd have to correct, I don't want those 5 days to start on a Friday. Hence I can't move it on the road. If you get caught, they do you for no tax, no registration, no MoT and no insurance. They tend to ban you to a lonely island and tell you to evolve into a more responsible life-form.

I'm planning for my 5 days to start Tuesday (Monday's a bank holiday here).

In the meantime outside of the garage and moving under its own steam (although, in light of the cooling dilemma, perhaps I shouldn't use the word 'steam')

God, you've done a gorgeous job on it.
When I got a Stag for my wife (Susiedeer) 3 years ago, your thread was the one I read over quite a few days and was captivated by your attention to detail and it helped me rebuild the gearbox (along with other web pages), ended up getting the last 1st/2nd gear left at paddocks to allow me to finish it. Stanley has lots needing to be done to ever get anywhere near your beauty but he has happily wandered around East Angia and beyond for the last 2 summers. Oh and your issue with the indicator cancel arm helped me to work out how to repair mine as well.
Extremely and exquisitely well done, I am sure it will sail through even a German MOT, Enjoy it. Cheers

                      Looks great Drew.

What's your thoughts on adding stripes? I initially was not going to but in the end I did and in my opinion the car looks better for it. Understand it is always a personal opinion though! Craig

                        Thanks for the comments!

Stripes and BL badges will go on, but I want the paint shop to go over it first as, over the years, some areas have "sunk" a bit leaving a slightly orange-peel surface.

Drew, she looks loverrrlly. Your car but, does she really need stripes? Looks great as is in my opinion.

                              ^ I'm with Jason.

But, then again, I like wire wheels......

Whatever, it looks delightful and goes to show what one man and his hobby can achieve.

                              Chapeau.

Drew, after my shopping tour I have measured the engine temperatures (red figures). We can discuss the results tomorrow especially your delta on the right and left transfer housing.
BTW:how did you get the "H" license plate w/o having passed the TÜV? Do you know the girl in the DON-administration?

                                Cheers Klaus
