      This is getting worrying - Maxis, Allegros, Maestros:shock:

      What next - a Lada:shock::shock:
      Being near the American air bases,the Americans were always seen in Ladas,they loved them.

      I would love a Maestro turbo to give the bmws a run for their money.

      The only thing I could fault the Maestros and Montegos were the metric tyre sizes which always cost a fortune to replace.
      My Montego GTi had 185/70/14s as standard - they dropped the metric tyres quite early on after customers complained about poor wear/high cost.

      As I worked in a Rover main dealer I got to roadtest quite a few Montego/Maestro turbos and they were, for what they were, very fast..... however my favourite of the lot was the Rover 420GSi Sport Turbo which was biblical in it's acceleration..... 200BHP in a car that weighed as much as a postage stamp with a power delivery like it was on Nitrous.... nearly killed myself a few times in a particular Nightfire Red one that was the service manager's daily hack.... and it was much more fun than the Tomcat (220 coupe)turbo because the handling was more balanced.... those were the days.... being paid to drive other people's cars like a nutter

        Russ - Was it just Rover vehicles or did you work on Triumphs as well. I'm asking because my 2nd (Mk 4) Spitfire broke its crankshaft in two for no apparent reason (it had overdrive & was never driven hard). BL didn't admit it but a metalurgist I knew who later examined the crank (the Garage gave it to me after they had fitted a new one) said that it had had a fault in the metal from the very beginning of it's manufacter. I couldn't prove anything though so was unable to claim any recompense from BL. Just wondered if you heard or saw any more broken cranks on Triumph or other BL cars of that era?.
        PS. There's a red Montego still being used as a daily runabout in Los Cristianos Town Centre - see it every time I go into Town & it doesn't look all that bad - even today.

            My Dad had a white one, after running it for years he gave it to my wife who used it as a 2nd car until eventually the sub-frame broke & had to scrap it. Nice quick car but gearbox was a bit sloppy.

              It was like Cerberus, the multi headed dog guarding the gates of hell..... it was a Rover, Triumph, Jaguar, Landrover, Austin and Morris dealer (Wolseley and all the others had disappeared from the line-up by the time I joined them) that mutated into an Austin Rover in the early 80sthen just plain Rover in the 90s - it stayed that way until 96 when I left because it became a Volvo dealer.

              There wasn't any particular issue with any model and their crankshafts other than the rubbish production quality with the exception of the 1980 Austin Metro 1000 fitted with the A+ "E" engine where they had accidentally underground the crankshaft from new due to a machinesetting errorbut fitted the engine with standard bearings.... we were fitting crank kits to every car as it came off the transporter.....

                possibly the sort of attitude that lined up the nails in the coffin of the British car industry. People bought it for reasons other than it was good. Obviously some great ideas and designs but always flawed in delivery by some avoidable reason - mostly management related.

                  Rich true brit? is that not an Alfa on your drive

                  I also consider myself a 'true brit' whatever that means; but a sensible one - apart from the stag all my cars recently have been German.
