Thanks for the top tip, Richard.

I for one am listening - paid a lot of money for my Mich's (195/14) that I don't regret. Always go for rubber with good wet as well as dry grip, you never know when you're going to need it. Target now is to use as much of the tread before age-replacement.

I am was not born within earshot of the Bow Bells nor do I live in Lunnon, I am happy enough with the Chelsea tractor moniker because I am pretty thick skinned and all that. I don't make a habit of bumping up onto pavements and my 23 year old Range Rover spends more time on the motorway than the city centre.

I did however have a nasty experience with AVON Ranger tyres and yet my opinion was totally dismissed by Graham, I must be a cockney, twat, etc etc etc because I don't share his view that a £60 tyre is not a premium tyre even though it is in fact the 5th cheapest in the 195/60 R15 range on blackcircles. (no apology if I got your tyre size wrong Graham )

This happened for no reason at motorway speeds I was incredibly lucky to get away with it. Fortunately because they were so rubbish on grip I had switched them from front to back prior to the event

      The Facts for Graham
The tread was good, they tyre was 4 years old and there were no visible signs of any other damage to the tyre carcass. The tyre fitter told me that they were now a budget brand. When the fitter removed the other rear tyre there was cracking the inside of the tyre on the beaded edge, the rest of the unblown AVON Ranger looked perfect. The fitter was so concerned that both were sent off for further analysis I have no idea of the results as other life events somewhat took over.

I will never buy an AVON tyre again. Good luck with yours Graham

Life goes on etc back to the fun
Lets just clear up a couple of points. Avon make many models from cheaper to more expensive. Lets not class cheaper/budget tyres as being crap they all have to meet a standard. I would fully expect that all manufactured good will have throwbacks whatever you pay for them, from tyres to cars to washing machines the list is endless. An example cars, let's say I bought a Mercedes and had a problem with it does that make all the models that they produce are crap no that would be nonsense. I don't know about Ranger tyres it looks like a pacific tyre for the Chelsea Tractor which I have never owned , now by your own admission the rest of the tyres "looked perfect" perhaps one slipped through the net that's possible with anything. You speak of facts for graham here's one you can check on. How many Avon Ranger tyres have failed in a similar manner has there ever been a recall on the model?? Being as the fitter was so concerned surly that would indicate that this was an extremely rare occurrence. One other post on here made me laugh that a tyre fitter ( not the most skilled job in the world) said "he would not even fit them to his mother in laws car" I would have thought if the tyres are so dangerous that's exactly what most blokes would do Anyway to conclude checking out the Avon website the last isle of man TT was won on Avon's so if those boys are to trust them on two wheels I'm happy on four I don't see luck coming into it. Following your sentiment exactly good luck with your new tyres because if they have a problem you wont buying them again either A final thought Richard about the facts thing, you said that the offending tyre went back to the manufactures but because you were ill you could follow it up ( fair comment) but now you better you still haven't done it. My point being is that you know that the tyre failed ( fact) but you don't know why (fact) but its fair game to condemn the product on the Forum

Back in the 70s when I owned two new Triumph Spitfires I specified that they be shod with Goodyear G800 tyyes rather than the basic tyres that came with the car. Triumph also specified the G800 as standard on the Vitesse Mk2 and the 2.5PI.
Can you still get G800s do you know?

Cant find them on the web or Ebay I think they stopped that line some years ago. I found 14's in the right speed rating are getting hard to get in a good make over here. You might have to get some cheap ole Chinese ones
