Sounds plausible that Triumph wasn't using metric size belts in 1974. I've tightened the belt considerably and the squeal goes away most of the time.

If you have a source for the correct dimensioned belts that would be great!

I moved my alternator to the LH head and bought new belts from LD Parts. They are both the longer GCB11113 PAS belt and no squealing.Dave

Alternator belt: this is the one I used for about 10 years w/o any problem and ordered now again:
AVX 10x725 CONTITECH
Steering pump belt: used for 10 years as well w/o any problem and ordered now again:
GATES Fan Belt 1113mm 9,9mm 6268MC
I had to change both due to pouring engine oil over the running surface

My new steering pump belt is squealing too. I didn't change it due to necessity but as I replaced the battery I thought it was wise to change the belt. Bought one from the usual top 5 Stag suppliers advertised as fitting for a Stag.
Now I find out that there are better replacements on the market available without habing to contact the Stag "specialists".
So my question might be a new topic: Is there a list of sort of standard replacements/consumables you rather buy from somewhere else?
cheers Hans

Today I got the new Gates belt and the packing is now labled: Gates 6268 MC AVX10 x 1113 La. Fits pefectly.
Years ago I bought a QH steering pump belt as a spare part and tried now to install it in the Stag. It was not possible to tension the belt correctly. Comparing the length with the new Gates belt over two circular bars: identical. So I speculate either the width or the V-angle is wrong. LDparts found something else is wrong with the QH belt:
So watch out.
