Whether you leave the soft top up or down will make sod all difference to your car being nicked! Lets face it, the soft top is not a secure defence is it. Best defence is an immobiliser.

As regards damage whilst the car is parked, do they cover you fordamage to the soft top if it is up? If its down and stowed it can't be damaged unless somebody goes to the trouble of popping up the tonneau cover.

I'm with you here Bruce, if someones intent of nicking it, they will, i had an escort cabriolet a while back and someone tried to nick it by cutting the roof, the insurance paid out for a new one to be fitted by a london firm:?.

If someone does nick the car with the roof down, was'nt it up when you left it?

      Hi All
If someone takes your car with the roof down and 1. you never see it again. 2. its recovered with the hood down who is to say it was knicked while the top was down?

Reading this thread made me check my Insurance policy, but then I remembered I only have 3rd Party cover (can't get anything more) and it costs me €330 a year just for that. There being only 2 Stags on the Island, if mine were pinched it would stick out like a sore thumb unless it were shipped abroad afterwards. Besides which my soft top is knackered and I just use a tonneau cover. Being a RHD car in a LHD Country is also a deterrent to theft. I did notice in my policy conditions though that my "softop" excess was zero.

As long as you’re in a place with no CCTV……. I can just about reverse my car out of the drive before the 1st camera gets me.

Ps I have nothing on my Classic car policy about leaving the roof down etc. So I have written to them today for a definitive answer. Watch this space.

                Hi All

                An update on insurance quotes.

Today I rang and got quotes from RH (£165.00), Footman James (£182.10), Adrian Flux (£135.00)and Peter D James (£126.78) based on 5-6000 miles and valuation of £11,000.00. I ask them all about the roof down scenario. RH said they are asked this question often and treat it as reasonable care in other words roof left open over night on street not good, anhour in the pub car park no problem The other three companies didn't know but referred to their bosses and told more or less the same. They all said if the car was locked with the windows up it would be covered. Haven't got in writing yet though.

RH miraculously matched the lowest quote when told. someones commision I suspect.
