:?hi raoul, shuttle valve o rings is this another valve in the od unit?? where is it located ??got a new solenoid to fit and have made a spanner to your design as pic i aim to clean the strainer and have just ordered a new gasket for o/d sump but sounds like i need to get these o rings to be on the safe side.

or am i mixed up and you mean the ones on the solenoid assy.

    cheers steve.............
    Hi Steve,

There is a small shuttle valve that runs inside the solenoid assembly, it has a couple of small dia orings (approx 6mm) these can harden/swell/split over time and cause the shuttle valve to stick with the overdrive on, especially when the engine is up to temperature. It's a bit of a pig to remove from the solenoid, especially if the orings haveaged as mentioned, when you reinstall it use lots of gearbox oil to lubricate the orings.

I'm going to be in Luton (Stopsley) in the second/third week of Sept staying with a Stag owning mate of mine, if you fancy a pint one evening?

    regards,

    Raoul

            Steve,

You might want to look at the orings in the overdrive solenoid shuttle valve, I have had the same symptomsin the past.

You will need to make up a special 1" spanner to remove the solenoid with the gearbox in the car as access is "restricted" by the gearbox tunnel, see attached photo. The spanner jaws will need to be reduced in thicknessalso.

I used a shaved wine bottle cork to plug thehole when I removed the solenoid, it preventedalot of oil from pouring out.

The most pleasurable part of the job was drinking the bottle of wine to obtain the cork!

            regards,

            Raoul
I have similar symptoms with my o/d. Changing the gearbox oil has helped but reading this thread I think I now need to change the solenoidO ring. I havea cork at the ready but is there anyone in the Surrey area who has a suitably adapted spanner that i could borrow?

                Hi guys

The J overdrive has two filters. 1/ A suction strainer just inside the alloy sump on the bottom side. 2/ Above that in the main body is a pressure filter/strainer behind a plug which requires a pin wrench to undo.

Mine had a small aount of dross in it but the one in the Spitfire was so choked I couldnt believe it still worked faultlessly.

                Cheers

                Ian
