    I tried the masking and scalple route this evening on my last wheel. It took about the same length of time as the liner brush method, just to lay the tape and carefully trim away the unwanted bits! I'm not sure about the edge leading from the recesses to the outer rim, following those curves with tape that prefers straight lines was iffy, and those little radii in each corner, impossible. Still the spray paint coverage was better and of course quicker and the tape masking will stay on for the colour and laquer coats, thats where the time will be saved.

    I'll give my final opinion when I peel the tape off.

      I wonder how they did it on production runs, sticking strips doesn't sound very quick.

        My guess is that the painting was done,and is done now on new and refurbished alloys,prior to a final machine skim.

          Hi John

          This is correct well done. All wheels are cast and heat treated (unless forged!) then machined painted then machined agian usually with diamond inserts hence the name diamond cut

            If someone could make a cardboard template they would make a few quid. But they would need to have patience for sure.

              There is a company near me that will refurb them for £40 a wheel, they will pick them up and return them.

              I have seen some they have done and it is top notch.

              Just got to save up now

                Well worth £200, plus VAT?

                It was the thought ofthe hassel of whatposting would be that I worried about. Shame I found out after I've got 3/4 way through my own wheel refurb, cost, paint and elbow grease.

                  Not sure about the vat, but being self employed and vat registered it is surprising what things are needed for tree surgery

                  As for the cost, seems very reasonable to me. I would rather go and work on a saturday doing what I like doing best, and give the money to someone else to do the wheels - much more fun

                    Do you know their name? I'm looking at the moment to have all 5 done. Costs vary wildly - I've seen anywhere between £50 - £120 (!) per rim. My only concern would be what the £40 includes... is it extra to remove and re-fit the tyres and weights? That could add 5-10 on each if not.

                    Had new Falken 205/70/14's fitted. Looks very nice. No scrubbing or tram lining to speak of (at least yet) but when the guy popped off the old tyres, the amount of white devil dust inside was alarming. They are also in pretty well worn condition so figured why not get it all done properly so there's one less thing to think about.

                      I've just finished the painting bits. I ended up going down the masking route, it was so much easier, not to happy about the sticky stuff left behind or the small amount of paint seepage (by capillary action I guess)on to the bright areas, but that should be easy to clean up.

                      As to cleaning up though, I've decided to hunt around for a local machinistwho hasa lathe with the capacity to take the 15"+ rims, with aview to re skimming the bright surfaces. This will mean that I would have to arrange to have the tyres removed. Ebley tyres removed one for me the other day, free! I did promise to by a new tyre from them once the refurb had been done, maybe that had something to do with it, although they are generally quite helpful.

                      On removal of the tyre mine too had a large amount of Aluminium oxide build up, no wonder the tyre didn't hold its pressure with no smooth surface to seal againt. It even had an inner tube to compensate, I was told that wasa no no these days.I've abraded and cleaned the surfaces and repainted. I hope the new tyre will now seal.

                      I'll let you know how I get on with the re-skimming.

                        John, Just back from week in Egypt, so haven't had a chance to have a read of yer email.

                        Looks pretty good paint job though, good effort!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
