The bonnet is hitting under where I have put the piece of card. The second and third photos shows the damage. I obviously can't even thing about repairing until I adjust it

do you know the history of the car has it had any new panels fitted ? ( eg new panel in front of bonnet )is it only rubbing where you have the card, ( ie is there just a high spot on panel gap with the bonnet open )

          Dave,

Not aware of any panel changes however it is 42 years old so I am sure there have been a few. Yes it is only touching where the card is. With the bonnet open I can slide a piece of paper under the bonnet and there is clearance in all areas apart from where the card is

Mine's doing the same in one spot. I thought about fettling the bonnet edge but the paint is still good -it's rubbing paint off the (rad support) top panel. I'm going to try a spacer under the hinge plates. New hinge pins might do the trick if the old ones are worn.

It might need elongated holes somewhere . The front clearance is always circa 10mm some person may have tried to lesson this but the clearance is needed as you know . How about a piano hinge ( only joking )

Try fitting a shim of some sort beneath both hinges. Thick gasket material should do the trick; just enough to stop it touching, but not enough to be noticeable with the bonnet closed.
