    Speed Awareness Courses

Those of you who, like me like a bit of spirited driving, and happen to stray from the straight and narrowoccasionally may have experienced an attendance at a National Speed Awareness Course.

I can highly recommend it (the course, not breaking the speed limits) if you get an option to go. It is usually only available to'moderate speeders' (OK I was lucky this time) as an option rather than pay a fixed penalty and get three points on your license.

You get a theory session followed by a couple of hours of on-the-road training and assessmentsand it is no easy option, but after completing the courseit makes you realise thatdriving on modern roads as long as I have without any further training is not the best policy.

Andjust when you think you are in bad company (we all sat there before the course in dead silence feeling slightly guilty) one of the attendees (no names mentioned)admitted to being a Rapid Response Driver(yes a policeman)!

    Anyone else done the course?

Yep ,but we didn't do any on the road training .we did do an anonymous question session via a computer bit like the touch pads in "who wants to be a millionaire "and i was gobsmacked at how may people didn't know the speed limits.

I did one of these this year, though it was all classroom stuff. Most people were unlucky, mobile camera vans like me, one or two had no idea of any speed limits and I was amazed they had not been caught before!

          Hi,

I did the course at Bracknell recently - only a classroom thing but thought it was excellent.
An amazing mix of people tight up to a couple of old ladies who must have been 70.

Following this I am planning on joining ROSPA who, for a modest joining fee will train you for free until you are ready for the advanced driving test.....

For 100 years, RoSPA has been quietly working behind the scenes to change both legislation and attitudes surrounding accidents. From the compulsory wearing of seatbelts and the campaign to stop drink driving, to the Cycling Proficiency Test and to the more recent ban on handheld mobile phones behind the wheel, RoSPA has been instrumental in shaping our society for the better, preventing millions of deaths and serious injuries along the way.

          cheers

I am ashamed to say that I did the speedawareness course 38 mph in a 30 limit.Got home
andsaid how good it was and that I was no longer a sinner.
Two weeks letter got done at the same speed camera this time 35mph.I have never been so
                      embarrassed andgutted all my life.
Since then(3 years ago)touch wood have not been caught and since I gave up work 2 years ago
                      have slowed down a lot
One thing they told us was when you reach a 30mph limit was to change down from 5thgear to 4th
This seems to work well, bit difficult in the auto Stag

Yes, I live in Gloucestershire.... but the office is in Slough - so got caught by Thames Valley Police who offer the course in Bracknell/Crowthorne. I don't think all police areas offer the course and let you off the points.

The the stop animation thing of the M4 pile up was pretty amazing.

I felt that they were genuinely interested in reducing the number of road accidents and serious injury just by slowing down a bit - all of what they said made sense.

Since then I've been doing 70 mph on the motorway and amazingly I still get to work at the same time - hardly ever have to go in the fast lane and cruise along in the slow lane - no hassle, no worries.

We had a DVD which showed a guy with a pizza packet crossing the road, and he gets hit at speed and goes flying. Its quite a shocker.

I feel very lucky to have had the practical driving session on the course, and since then I have been practisingsome new techniques.

Before the course I used to feelthat 30mph was driving too slowly, but now I have so much to think about I have slowed down quite a lot already.

Whether it lasts or not we shall see.
