Our local guy is a proper old fashioned "Garagiste" who runs his own classics and understands old cars, full price MOTs but It's a very thorough inspection for the money, most main dealers are at £60 - £80 per hour and I think it's goodvalue. I hope we never loose him. Martin.

      hi don

ive just took my 2000 mk2 estate for mot today in newton abbot and they had the one man steering checker last year.so as i always stay and view the mot i waited to see this in action again. but the young lad who does the mot on my cars each yearwho by the way is great, does it the old way with a jemmi bar i say whats wrong with the one man system he says he prefers the old way and the new all singing dancing version is a pile of cr*p as it keeps jamming and you can,t feel the play in the steering joints so easily as the whole car is moving side to side.So much for progress!!

it passed ok anyway! cheers grahame

Took my Stag to a local garage when I first bought it back in May.

The young guy thay the garage assigned to it had no idea what he was doing.

I asked him if he had located and greased all the nipples bellow, he quickly pointed out that there were none???? I asked him if he had checked the timing he said he had. ( HE DID NOT it was 4Degout I found out later) he also mucked around with the alternator and the ignition light now stays on constantly and get's brighter the more revs you use.

Basically what I paid for was, for this guy to FANNY about, drop the engine oil, change the filter, grease the various locking mechanisms, top up fluid levels, all of the latter I had already done, and as far as I could see that was it. He did point out that the engine had a major oil leak from the big end bearings and would need an engine strip down, that was absolute rubbish as the leak came from the seals on the pressure sensor housing which I have now changed myself. No leaks at all now.

For this I was charged 211 pounds, when I complanied and spoke with his boss, they said that they would arrange for the car to come back. They never did, and to be honest I would not put the car back there ever again!!! I never recieved a refund on my 211 pounds.

Unfortunately I am not a mechanic, but am learning fast as there are many Dick Turpin type characters out there just waiting for novices like me to rob and mislead.
