    Quick update:

Thanks for the views on the oil, unfortunately I changed the oil not 50 miles ago, that's when I found the gunge in the bottom of the filter. So the oil that is in the sump now will not have had any time to pick up much.

Good news though is the dealer as arranged for the car to be transported to EJ Wards, week after next for inspection / assesment. They are going to remove the engine, have looking the oil galleries and the bearings.

    Cheers
    Matt

That is good news, the dealer is doing the right thing. If you have paid top whack for something like your Stag, the dealer needs to show you are getting something for the money.

Excellent Matt, that is a good outcome at the moment, you should get an objective view.

Brilliant Matt. Looks like the dealer is a good un and the process should be quicker and less stressful than if otherwise.

                UPDATE

Car has been at Ward's for a while now: diagnosis is swarf left in block during previous rebuild, one big end bearing damaged, light marking to other bearings, cam followers tight due to pick up of metal particulate. So full rebuild required, the dealer I bought the car off has agreed to pick up most of the cost. I'm thinking now of a few things to get done as the engine is in pieces.....suggestions?

                My list so far is:
Balancing (Ward's wanted to do this anyway
                Lightened flywheel
                Electric Water pump
                ??????

Thanks for all you thoughts over the last weeks, been a bit tense at times but the dealer has done the right thing in the end.
                Cheers
                Matt

Good news, indeed, Matt. Looks like you've been dealing with a top dealer. I guess you could name him now - he seems worthy of some good publicity.

Perhaps best to wait until the Dealer has actually picked up most of the costs and paid out the required spondulix.

I was thinking of making exactly the same response, but wondered if it was too cynical. But I think you are right!

However, we usually knock the motor industry, but I had a good experience in December/January (no connection with the Stag - this was for my plastic car - as distinct from 'real' car).
I damaged my Achilles tendon in my left leg in December, so had to urgently exchange my 2017 Skoda Octavia manual for an automatic. I found one on-line at Marshalls of Barnstaple; 2 months older than mine, and a coupe of thousand miles more, and one option level below (SE versus SE Sport), but advertised as having cruise control (standard on my SE Sport, optional on the SE). They offered free delivery and collection of my old one, and a good deal on price.
After it was delivered, i realised it didn't have cruise, and for me, this is a must have. Further checking indicated that this can be retro-fitted. Many apologies from Marshalls for the error in the advert, instructed me to get it fitted at my local Skoda dealer, and they would pay. I got it done, and within days of sending them a copy invoice, the money was in my bank account.
Excellent service. I don't expect the motor industry to be totally free of mistakes (it is not run to the QA levels of civil aviation, for example); what is important is how they deal with them, and this was an example of the best way.

I hope Matt's situation turns out as well.
