I ordered one of the recommended Bosch 0221119030 coils and fitted it yesterday. So far, so good. I may detect a slight improvement in response, but that may just be psychological. The coil I took off I have been using for at least 15 years. It was given to me by a Stag owning Lucas agent. Looking closely at it, it appears to be 30 years old, yet has been working fine, despite being located in the Triumph specified position attached to the inlet manifold. I’ll be a happy chap if I get that longevity from the Bosch item.

If you have a ballasted system you need a coil rated at 1.5, non ballasted mine is 0.6. Most people run ballasted systems.

Paul - 3 projects, 1 breaker - garage built and housing 2 white Stags. One runs, one doesn't

Pretty sure that Lucas 110 is the one Peter recommends

If your figures are referring to resistance, then yes, a coil for a ballasted system will normally have a resistance of around 1.5 ohms; the ballast itself is ~1.5 ohms, giving the combo a resistance of ~3 ohms (consuming ~4A whilst the "contacts" are closed) except whilst cranking. Unballasted system coils are, I believe, around 3 ohms. If yours is for unballasted.systems with only 0.6 ohms resistance, it will eat loads of current (~20A with "contacts" closed) and get pretty hot as will create 10X the heat in a standard set-up. Maybe your specific electronic ignition module is moderating the current somewhat.

Bosch "Red" coils (favoured by many) for ballasted systems specifies 1.8 ohm ballast, which is a tad more than the standard Stag, but I've never heard of this being a problem by those using these.

Yes, but the modern Lucas stuff is cr*p compared with the proper stuff. And this is the Gold Sport model, which is NLA. It is now in my boot as a spare in the (hopefully) unlikely event that the new Bosch item fails.

I have an original type Lucas dizzy cap fitted, which is better quality than that now available. I’ve also got a couple of spares. One is a slightly used RR standard Lucas cap. This is notably heavier than the standard Lucas ones available for lowlier V8 engines such as the Stag, Rover and Aston Martin......

Help me out, what else are coils measured in?

Just wanting to be clear I understood what you were talking about before strongly disagreeing with your bizarre statement. Am afraid that anyone following your recommendation to fit a 0.6 ohm coil on an un-ballasted system with points or a Lumenition or other electronic ignition module not specified for such a low resistance coil is likely to suffer failure in a very short time. Could be very costly as well.

Seems to work fine on my car thanks

I have emailed Pertronix of this pending disaster on your behalf

From the town cruiser to track-ready vehicles, Pertronix Coils are made for engines that have high expectations. Every time your camshaft rotates just once on a V8 engine, it ignites 8 sparks in order to ensure reliable performance and complete combustion of fuel mixtures - an astonishing feat considering how many time

Running fine on my unballasted Stag also

Yep it’s almost like I did my research and called the manufacturer to check what system I needed with the ignition system they specify for the Stag.

Oh wait that’s exactly what I did.
