Play in Steering Wheel Triumph Stag

Just had my front suspension fully refurbished with poly bushes, new track road ends etc and rack checked by reputable Stag specialist but still have play in steering wheel, is this ok? Thought it would have removed the poly to be honest.

The uj’s in the lower column could be worn so check them but the steering does have what appears to be a certain amount of “slack” when it is moved without the engine running due to the torque rod in the power steering.

There is a torsion bar in the control valve of the rack. It's held in with roll pins. Some folks have reported the hole become elongated. This cause some play. As Terry mentions, the UJ in the lower shaft can also contribute to the wobble.

There are also 2 taper bearings at the top of the steering column behind the steering wheel.

Stupid question??? Is the nut on the end of the column tight.

the size is 1&1/16th inch, it can be tight but will usually come off, getting the wheel off the spline can be more of a problem, may need a slide hammer , dont completely remove the nut when trying to get the wheel off unless you want it to hit you in the face!Derek

                Hi,
The steering inner/outer column shafts have a set of interlocking splines that allow the steering column to extend. e.g. reach adjustment.
Try extending the column and see if the amount of play changes.
I found that the splines had worn so that there was always a slight amount of rotational play through the steering column.
I purchased a second-hand steering column but unfortunately there was still some play.
So, I tightened the lock nut/ring that holds the outer column to the inner column so that there was no rotational play but the position of the steering wheel can no longer be adjusted for reach.
                (No movement along the splines).
I have attached pictures so that you can see the inner/outer shafts and the lock ring in question.
                regards,
                Den
